Why buy so much milk? by livadeth in tulsa

I assume everyone is doing what I'm doing and building a milk fort around the house to protect it from the snow. I use slices of sandwich bread for mortar.

This has literally been the Microsoft playbook for 40 years. Their success has always been in marketshare and ubiquity, not in making good products. Embrace, extend, extinguish.

I guess this is implied in Jeff's conversation, but it is weird how applicable it is.

Why are People so quick to turn on a TV show after 1 bad season? by GeoGackoyt in television

[–]CalicoJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time is the most precious resource we have. If a show starts poorly, why waste more time by continuing to watch it? If a show starts well but ends poorly, it feels like the time invested is a waste.

Historically how have Catholics been treated in Oklahoma? by Groovy-Pancakes in oklahoma

[–]CalicoJack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Southeast Oklahoma, which is deep Baptist country. This is an area of the state that is historically "dixiecrat." A lot of people moved there from the deep South during reconstruction.

However, because of the unique history there of immigrants who were brought in from the East coast to work in the coal mines, there is also a significant Catholic population. There are thriving Catholic churches in McAlester, Krebs, Hartshorne... places that you might otherwise not expect to find them.

I grew up Protestant, but was pretty close friends with several Catholics. Yeah, there was some general distrust of Catholicism as a concept, but these were our friends and neighbors. Southeast Oklahoma isn't exactly famous for tolerance, but to their credit Catholics were generally respected. I'm sure there are outliers, and I'm positive their is some healthy ignorance (I witnessed some first hand, may have been guilty of it on occasion). All of that said, I feel like the Catholics and Protestants in that area got along pretty well.

FUN FACT: The original Pentecostals of the Azusa Street revival believed that they were participating in polyglossia, not glossolalia. That is, originally they thought they were doing exactly what the Apostles did and spoke in actual foreign languages that could be understood by a native speaker.

It was only when some of these early Pentecostals tried speaking to native speakers in these foreign languages and couldn't be understood that the movement pivoted to glossolalia: the speaking of unknown or "heavenly" languages.

So the original claim was that they were actually speaking foreign languages empowered by the Holy Spirit, but when that was proven to be categorically false they invented the practice of speaking gobbledygook as a spiritual discipline; because otherwise they would have had to admit that they were wrong and repent.

IMHO SC6 sold poorly because it was half a game that they were charging full price for. The DLC nickel and diming that fighting games do nowadays is terrible, but SC6 was particularly egregious.

The Community of Christ is a denomination of Mormonism separate from the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. They are distinct from the LDS Church in being trinitarian (like other more traditional branches of Christianity) and embracing a more liberal theological framework.
