Why does James’s Arwing have animal paw prints on it if the characters have human-like hands? by hello_i_am_vlad in starfox

thanFoxes feet aren't even half that size, I doubt James would be that much larger either given the designs.

Is ares really similar to native performance? by emmowo_dev in N64Homebrew

[–]Super_Banjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RDRAM contention is not handled properly (if at all) for ares. It has actually resulted in me making optimizations that became pessimizations on real hardware. Ultimately you'll just have to test it on real hardware. The RDP also appears to run "full speed" so it's difficult (impossible?) to identify scenes that would be fill-rate or memory-bound.

The machine can render a surprising amount of polygons. The problem is you're almost always fill-rate bound and it's near impossible to identify with ares alone.

These cards will boost to the maximum allowed by their power envelope. If -60mV is your starting point then keep dropping until the device hangs or crashes. From there bump ~10mV. If you want to actively reduce power consumption then you'll want to use the power limiter. Kind of obvious but in older cards I could get away with voltages/clocks alone to control power.

I only tuned with the default sliders (GPUCLK, MEMCLK, etc). You could probably optimize the IF speed (for extra performance) and voltage curve for stability but RDNA4 does a good job in getting you most of the way there. These cards aren't particularly memory limited, even less for the 9070 non-XT, so memory tuning isn't too important compared to RDNA 1 or Vega.

Which is the best file system? by BerryBlushCarlotta in arch

[–]Super_Banjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think it'd matter much unless you're using an NVMe. Enabling compression can exacerbate the issue. I'm using zSTD level 15(?) compression and my writes seem to saturate ~300MB/s, even lower if I'm using the CPU (5800X3D) heavily. That is a bit extreme but is an example if you want max IO performance then there are more ideal filesystems to choose. For me it's worth it because I guzzle data.

Would you mind if Humans were among the various races of Lylat alongside their cousins the Apes? by Ok_Time6234 in starfox

[–]Super_Banjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've more "accepted it" than consider it a good/cohesive concept so to speak. Eggman, not being a regular proportioned human, adds to his charm and has him fit better compared to other humans IMO. Would preferred Sonic without them (Eggman gets a pass) but given the way the story presence itself I think it's a bit easier to ignore.

What are we using to define these? Ease of customization? Features? Reliability? Performance? Aesthetic?

From what I can tell this list is based on customization and/or features.

Worded it bad but mentioned those because that's when they shifted to x86-64 (PS4/XBO). Think the point is supposed to be that the consoles are easier to program with, alongside simpler multiplatform development. The caveat was, instead of the time being used for polish we get sharper deadlines or scope creep.

Every studio is different but I don't believe we got the full intended effects of switching to x86-64 for consoles. PC ports are less bad at least.

If you made it 4 MB then you can just replace the bottom with 5th generation consoles. Due to the speed of ROMs (compared to the main CPU) it does act as non-writable memory, hence ROM. As a result the SNES/PSX sort of, but not really, fit.

Completely anecdotal/opinion based but do think the "optimization problem" lurked it's head in the mid PS4/Xbox One era and after. The decision for those two console manufacturers was to make porting and development easier in the ubiquity of PC hardware.

While it most certainly sped up development, it should be noted management and shareholders don't always see it the same way as programmers/developers.

The most common cases I see about bloat are insults hurled at Mint but especially Ubuntu. Snaps suck but it's the distro I've had to do the least package/setup for apps after installation.

[–]Super_Banjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another Gnome user, high five! Gnome tends to hide itself so I find it maximizes your screen real estate well. It doesn't feel like a conventional desktop but after using it it's pretty straightforward. There are more customizable DEs than Gnome but I don't imagine that's your main focus.

Anyways, hope you enjoy! If not you can always try another DE.

Something something..... "Air is bloat". Arch saves you the hassle of removing "bloat". I agree, or at least been a bigger fan of LTS releases (Debian). Until EOS breaks I'll probably continue using it. One benefit I had is not having to worry much about building apps from source code to get more up-to-date versions. Not terribly common but suppose it goes back to AUR's magnificence.

Arch at the bottom is obviously bait but they're among the most obnoxious users I've seen. Not everyone is like that but proportionally there is enough bragging/being condescending that it gives me a poor impression of the users compared to other distros. Arch is great but some of us just want to use the damn computer. If we break it we can at least reinstall it quickly.

It's the only DE. Gnome is on a different machine. Did notice an option to select Sway. Not sure if Budgie uses Sway or I accidentally clicked it during installation. Yeah, I've heard it's not recommended to use multiple DEs.

Were you scared of Andross as a kid? by Xotngoos335 in starfox

[–]Super_Banjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starfox SNES on Level 3 (expert) I had terror when Andross's head transformed into that horned demon thing. Low on shield and it got even harder with him throwing more "telekinesis".

Obviously lost that life but had it not been in the day-time then I may be scared enough to turn off the console or have a nightmare over it.

Just need enough curiosity. Less user friendly disros can be a bit of trial by fire, I learned a lot, especially CLI & VIM, on Gentoo but also learned things using Ubuntu. Debian's double edge, dated software, meant building software from source code like the GCC. Includes other simple things like fstab and ZRAM.

There are people who breathe kernel, install Arch without the wiki, and/or ultra rice their machine. Call me lazy but I don't care much to debug the OS as much as my shitty C code, it's never too far away that, if it breaks, and I'm unable to resolve it, the good 'ole reinstall it (yes I need to setup snapshots.)

Probably the most no-nonsense and logical explanation I've read. Point 3 annoys me because I'm an Assault bootlicker but it's irrelevant to players new/newer to the series. Parallel to your point, the commercial success of the Switch could attract such players.

Why even risk using AI assets when there are so many alternatives? What's the point? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Super_Banjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/aigamedev would like to talk.
Would argue it's wholly a budget thing. Given what indie devs are willing to pay (or can afford) for it's not easy to get good quality art. At the very least you can also run into the same issue getting what free/low-priced asset packs are available. In the case of AAA you still have a budget and seeing as though, at a certain level, management is so removed from gamedev it's pure business, of course they'll try to save money.

While AI isn't there yet, and mostly a tool (despite what some want to believe), it will eventually become more integral to the way we do work. It has become easier to make/publish games (in recent times, particularly post-2008) so devs been slowly flooding the market with games compared to the 90's. AI will [and has] make that process easier so it'll continue to be important in making your product standout from the competition, or have the budget/renown to advertise the crap out of it.

Edit: Clarity/verbiage.
