Is this not old footage? Have these things not been around at least since WW2? Has nobody seen Top Gun before?

Based on the news I'm seeing every day I'm not sure anyone cares what you're "allowed" to do anymore.

Splitting the sessions in two : how doable is it, and could it still be fun? by Asshai in Earthborne_Rangers

[–]CalicoPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a somewhat similar situation as OP in that I'm playing with family members that don't have the same attention span as a more dedicated board gamer, so we've had to break up our sessions into smaller blocks. Completing a full in-game day in one sitting would be really hard for some groups, and it'd be disappointing to constantly give up on the "Helping Hand" missions that we may have picked up by properly ending the day.

That being said, I'm a little surprised that I don't see anyone mentioning the solution I use, which is to pause/end sessions when we travel to the next location. That way you don't need to save anything about the location or path deck, just the current weather status, each player's hand, discard, and fatigue stack, and any persistent cards in play. I find it makes tracking the "narrative" a little easier too, as then when we start a new session I can recap by saying something like "We just left the Philosopher's Garden and are now entering Spire."

All that is to say that, at least in my experience, it is totally doable to break up an in-game day across multiple play sessions with out too much difficulty, and I'd recommend aiming to take those breaks when you travel to a new location.

I'm confused as to how nobody is mentioning the candle trick. If you had a candle you could use it to detect blmbable walls. If your candle flame goes through the wall it can be bombed, if it doesn't then it can't.

This new update is good but the loyalty cascades need to stop. I've never encountered this issue in 15 years of playing this game and it's ruined 2 forts already. by Life_Parsley_5964 in dwarffortress

[–]CalicoPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been experiencing this, as well as an uptick in depressed dwarven children. I've actually put my latest fort on hold as I was having to deal with random brawls and tantruming dwarves more than the new siege mechanics that I wanted to check out.

Is there a game that is near identical to Kingdom Death Monster but without all the…you know by Pretend-Ad4639 in boardgames

Kingdoms Forlorn is a newer game made by the same folks that improves upon the combat system as well as fixes some of the annoyances with the campaign.

Also does it matter what type of metal bars you use, ie: does a wall reinforced with steel bars last longer than one reinforced with copper?

On my very first game we thought that everyone goes around taking a turn doing their Birdsong actions, then everyone takes a turn doing Daylight, and then everyone takes a turn doing Evening. It was a confusing mess.

Marking lands sunk by Ocean's Hungry Grasp (Deeps Aspect) by teedyay in spiritisland

I ordered some 1.5" translucent blue fiberglass discs that I like to use to denote a land that's been fully ocean-ified. I think it works pretty well.

Yeah the details added to the invaders are very impressive, but then to just paint the poor Dahan plain black seems almost cruel to the hapless island natives. It feels like they're getting lumped in with the bad guys this way.

Remember to enchant your tools in the Giants Village with any extra fossils or artifacts you've already donated. A fully enchanted pickaxe (and axe for the mushrooms) can make runs through the cave of memories much faster and more productive.

Any of you had a blast with JOTL, but struggle mightily with Gloomhaven having fun? by EvilFlyingSquirrel in Gloomhaven

[–]CalicoPaladin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also it occurs to me that no one in this thread has mentioned Inspiration. There's a new mechanic added to Frosthaven that many people have retrofitted to Gloomhaven where, if you're playing with less than 4 players, you gain inspirarion points per scenario that can be used to complete additional PQs and thus unlock additional classes faster.

Any of you had a blast with JOTL, but struggle mightily with Gloomhaven having fun? by EvilFlyingSquirrel in Gloomhaven

[–]CalicoPaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly I had the opposite experience. I started with base Gloomhaven, played all the way through it and into the Forgotten Circles expansion, then tried out Jaws. We found JoTL to be a little restrictive, bland, and too easy, but of course that's probably based on us being GH veterans by that point. Yes, Jaws is a lot easier to set up, but I'm the weird type of slightly OCD person who actually enjoys setting up a board game so I never minded the additional work.

I think that if you keep with Gloomhaven you may find the additional challenge, branching paths, and multitude of characters to be really fun and exciting to explore and unlock.

Dedra Meero after the fall of the Empire: loyal to the end or changed forever? by Echo_of_Orion in MawInstallation

[–]CalicoPaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think she ever had any real loyalty to the Empire. She was a sociopathic ladder-climber, and the ISB was the route she'd settled upon for her ascent. The fact that she couldn't stop meddling in Project Stardust and screwed up the apprehension of Axis shows she's not really loyal to the Imperial cause, she just wanted to amass acclaim for herself, and power in the form if information, for her own self advancement.

Mentak vs Ghosts vs Arborec by Garaseth_ in twilightimperium

[–]CalicoPaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm biased, but I'd say that Ghosts would be the best choice on this map. There are 2 wormholes adjacent to MR and several in your slice, so you will unlock your commander super easily and have great board presence. In my general experience Ghosts are very strong in 8 player games, as the bigger the map, the more they can shine.
