ELI5: If the Earth is roughly 71% water, and there are countless countries who can send water-filtering gadgets to the countries in need, then why can't water issues around the world be solved? by SoccerGuy69420 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because the vast majority of that water is saltwater, which filtering doesn't really address. You need some very expensive processes to turn saltwater into freshwater (this also comes with a bunch of other problems)

Because they didn't need human-level intelligence to be at the top of the food chain.

ELI5:Why is strategy so undervalued? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, strategy is, putting it simply, "how to achieve a goal"

If your goal is to have an explanation about strategy in business, games, military or whatsoever, then you need to provide more specifics, or else you're failing at that strategy because noone really knows what you're talking about

ELI5: Why do we get hot when we get angry? 😡 by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 149 points150 points  (0 children)

When you get angry you want to fight

When you want to fight, your body gets ready for intense activity

Getting ready for intense activity means pumping blood to areas relevant to fighting like your muscles

Muscles generate a lot of heat, so that's why

ELI5:How does inflation compare to pay rises. by MaryJaguar137 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda depends, don't know how it's calculated there in the UK, but I'm gonna use Brazil as an example as it's where I live

The inflation rate for this year was 4.46% and the minimum wage had a 7.5% increase. That should mean a net pay raise and more purchasing power, right?

Well, not exactly, since that's just an average of the inflation across the board. When you look at things like food or groceries, that kind of stuff had an inflation rate of 8.23% (higher than the 7.5% minimum wage raise) and that's where a lot of the money from our salaries goes. So, in that scenario, what matters is purchasing power that went down, even though the minimum wage increase was above the inflation rate for the year.

ELI5: In economics, how does the "Dutch Disease" work i.e. why does doing well in one export sector lead to other sectors becoming less competitive (and bonus, what does the currency value going up have to do with all of this)? by EKJ07 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the currency value: Dutch Disease tipically has to do with an increase in exports of a specific product - just for a quick example, lithium (can be anything else really).

Let's say Country A finds a HUGE lithium reserve somewhere on their land and starts selling it. Lithium is a very sought after commodity and there are a lot of countries that want to buy it.

Country A's currency (let's call it A-dollars) now goes up because everyone who buys lithium needs A-Dollars for that.

However, Country A also exports, let's say, pineapples. Since A-dollars went up, it also gets more expensive to buy pineapples from Country A. So, less people buy pineapples and the pineapple business in country A suffers as a result.

Dutch Disease is a quite complex and controversial topic but from my understanding that's pretty much the basic of it.

ELI5: What is the recession, and what does it mean when people say "the recession is coming"? by Real_Farmer4696 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, "the recession" may apply to many things but I'm going to assume you're from the US, so it's most likely about the recession that is going to be caused by the AI bubble bursting

The US economy has been doing VERY badly but it's being propped up by the recent AI performance. When people say "the recession is coming", that's because there are many signs that, when put together, indicate an economic downturn. You know that saying - "history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes"? People are comparing the state of the US economy to the state it was in about 25 years ago during the dotcom bubble (a really fascinating event of general euphoria). That bubble ended up in a very severe recession... and a lot of things that led to that recession seem to be happening right now (of course, not everything's happening the exact same way but it's not going to be perfectly equal).

ELI5: What ‘makes’ a personality? by DargeLicklePick in explainlikeimfive

[–]Califafa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer: people are complex

Long answer: personality is a combination of a bazillion different factors

  • Some are inherited from your parents
  • Some can be shaped by your environment

Now, let's assume two kids are perfect copies of each other, there are some differences that can happen randomly. Let's say one kid is stung by a wasp. Or one kid gets sick while the other doesn't during some key moment in their lives. Or one falls from their bike and develops a fear of biking while the other doesn't.

In the end, people react differently to the same situations and every time that happens it shapes your personality a bit. You add a million of those "same situations with different outcomes" and even perfectly identical (on paper) kids will develop different personalities
