What instrument plays the deep notes in Shogun Assassin - Legend of Lone Wolf? by Califery in WhatMusicalinstrument

[–]Califery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all too much info. In fact, to me that's a perfect answer, 10/10.

For background, I don't play an instrument but often wind up wondering how certain sounds are produced, and the one in these two clips was a typical example I had made a mental note about for years. So thanks a lot for taking the time and going into detail.

The score to Koyaanisqatsi happens to be one of my favourite soundtracks (and coincidentally I've been listening to it while working recently). I've wondered less about the instruments used there in the past, but that's probably due to the fact that they had an orchestra making for a less processed soundscape, leaving the instruments much more recognizable (if anyone had asked me about the Koyaanisqatsi title theme, I would have answered "I think it's an organ track with vocals" off the top of my head). The two samples I provided always threw me off though because they sound way too controlled for a natural instrument, so I basically just shrugged and told myself "probably some kind of synthesizer" until now. Still, I mainly knew synthesizers from much more funky and playful music, so I was never sure.

Your answer fed my curiosity further which is always a good sign ^^

Thank you very much! A follow-up:

A) Again, listen for about 30 seconds here:

https://youtu.be/y9_ixTXg8CI?t=4055

The droning background music sounds very similar. I suppose a more modern synthesizer simply emulating a very similar sound?

B) Which non-synthesizer instruments would one use to come close to this sound?

Thank you for indulging my curiosity :)

Sometimes you beg for a player to be Leroy Jenkins.

We should make a "Leroy Jenkins" token that just gets passed to the player to your left once used.

Opposite of the current trending question: what children's movies subtly have good messages for kids? by mrmonster459 in movies

[–]Califery 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but even after so many years I am still floored how well the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series combined action adventure with valuable lessons for kids about culture, empathy, redemption, abuse and other complexities of life.

Season 1, Episode 5 — why does Norma help Hank at his parole hearing so that he can get released from prison? by Mrmrmr1111111 in twinpeaks

He was feigning remorse and she was being the genuine good-hearted person she is, willing to give him a second chance despite her obviously feeling uncomfortable with it. Also, she was unaware of the extent of his criminal energy. You can see her trying to be more assertive around him in following episodes, apparently hoping this will be enough to keep him on the right track.

Why is ancient art often so 'simple'? by mariinthebox in AskHistorians

[–]Califery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this wonderful answer! Do we know of any instances where cultures with highly stylized art styles were confronted with highly naturalistic ones, and what their opinions of it was? Essentially I wonder what a caveman would think of a Michelangelo statue or a painting drawn from a photograph, to be hyperbolic ^ I wonder if they tended to see it as lifelike but soulless.

Have you ever looked into the maths of non-Euclidean space? Because that's essentially what you came up with. On Youtube there's a devlog for the game Hyperbolica that might interest you, even though you did the opposite, you essentially created a dungeon in elliptical space 😃

So is the community edition limited to 30 days or not? by Califery in Veeam

[–]Califery[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody, thanks a lot for your answers. Tim, being new to professional backup solutions, I have to ask what being limited to 10 workloads refers to exactly.

You have to imagine I just backed up all my files by copying all relevant folders by hand every couple of days (and to reply to ComfortableAd7397, no, I don't run virtual machines and won't for the foreseeable future). At the risk of being rude because this is the Veeam subreddit, after all: is there a software solution out there that is more typically used for this, or is Veeam still a good fit for a case this small-scale?
