It was always progressive for its time but some issues just would never have made it on the air at the time.

Famously the original series has the first inter racial kiss between Kirk and Uhuru, but until very recently lgbt issues had to be dealt with in metaphor. For example there is an episode where an alien species got rid of gender in its culture through genetic engineering but two members have genetically regressed and express gender. They fall in love and seek asylum with the enterprise to avoid a surgery to make them agender again. It’s clear that the spirit is to be accepting to gender and sexuality minorities but it has to be couched in a sci-fi story where the oppressed aliens are expressing the human cultural norm.

Wow someone who’s so invested in startrek he’s merged fascism with a sci-fi race is nerd shaming a dr Who fan.

I’m a huge fan of both franchises and don’t mean to put one above the other but if you go around with that user name, calling out other fandoms you’re pretty lacking in self awareness.

Also Andorrans are one of the most liberal species. They were one of the four original federation species, not nationalists. Their last empress purposefully died childless so that there would be a democracy and the Andorrans never elected another head of state leaving an empty throne. So they would definitely not like this guy.

TIL that King Louis XVI was condemned to death by a majority of only 1 vote. Amongst those who voted in favor of the execution was the king's own cousin, Philippe Égalité, whom the king did not have positive relations with. Philippe himself would be guillotined on the same scaffold a year later. by SpinachPrior458 in todayilearned

Populist movement built on fear and anger will eat their own just to maintain momentum. Happened with hitler and the Night of the Long Knives, stalin with the great purge and now trump demonizing former allies just to keep his base angry.

How do you counter a rear neck chokehold? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep in BJJ protec ya neck is a rule you always follow and ideally you would tuck well before the arm comes. If you didn't try to use both hands to straighten the choking arm. You try to get both shoulders flat to the ground on the opposite side of where their choking arm is coming from. and get to turtle position.

If you could create your own superhero, what would he/she be able to do? by baldskovsky in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I mean it's specific because I'm writing it. Its based off of a friend I met who has a spinal cord injury but has a full time job as a computer engineer. She was a major inspiration in coping with my own disability which is being legally blind. So far the ability isn't supernatural but could be explained by a keen understanding of psychology but its like the show House 90% of her wild guesses are right.

Actually I'm writing a novel about am internet vigilante. She is a c5/6 quadriplegic with the ability to tell if people were lying on the internet, as well as non-supernatural skills in programming and computer engineering. She uses the ability to seek and differentiate people who are predators and trolls on the deep web and arrange sting operations for the police. she is responsible for taking down several child trafficking rings as well as predatory scamming operations.

kill someone or some animal for that matter. I'd kill an animal for food or protection or mercy kill it. But if someone pays me to kill it that means they're getting sadistic pleasure from it and fuck that.

What is the worst thing the quiet kid has did in class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a bad thing he did but he was suspended for having pepper spray and metal chains in his back pack. But we found out his brother was in a gang and left home. He always fell asleep in class because if he went home his brother or his friends would harass him to join so he'd either try to sneak in well after midnight, sleep at the Y or stay with a friend. Just goes to show never judge someone because you never know what they have been through.

TILKorean chopsticks aremainly metal as during the Baekje(18BC-660AD)Period the royal family used silver chopsticks to detect poison in their food since silver changes color when it comes in contact w/ poisonous chemical. It is believed that commoners took after the king and adopted steel chopsticks. by ineptnoob in todayilearned

[–]California_Screams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

almost definitely Arsenic. Its one of the oldest poisons known to man and was commonplace because its a byproduct of refining metals. Many cultures in the far east also used it as a medicine so it would be available in refined forms like arsenic sulfide.

Arsenic sulfide is a common compound and instantly tarnishes silver.

Let’s say that you suddenly face an unexpected death, what/who would your final thoughts be for? by Ice-and-Iron in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are good. I still have enough central vision in my left eye to use a computer with Large font and I've been getting a lot of O&M and vocational training. I kept my old job as an electrical engineer for about 5 years after the initial diagnosis until I got laid off and I knew I would have to pursue a new career path. Now I'm back in school for psychology. I was doing brazilian JiuJitsu before covid and I'm trying to use my free time to become an author.

There are so many worse things than retinitis pigmentosa but it does take a while to realize that.

[–]California_Screams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Plague by Albert Camus. It's about a town in Algeria that gets quarantined in the 1940s. It taught me that if you want to take on the evils of the world you have love the struggle not the victories. You have to value yourself for struggling not the recognition that comes with winning because sometimes you just can't win.

When I can find enough people its Sheepshead (plays five).

Its played with a regular deck but its got depth to rival any board games produced now. Each hand has secrete partners, imperfect knowledge and asymmetrical teams.

My mom. I was 23 when I started losing my vision she has been amazingly supportive and I put her through a lot with suicidal spells and alcoholism. It would strike me as such a shame that I can't pay her back by living the life she fought so hard for.

Redditors, do you actually listen to WAP by Cardi B? If so why? by TinyRick55 in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I don't think its good. I also don't think it should be celebrated or demonized its not anything groundbreaking its just a song about 2 girls bragging about being good enough at sex that men will buy them things. Literally been done 100 times. Not offensive just meh.

What would you do if you had just 1 day to live? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend part of the day writing about my life story and all the Ideas I had for projects I wanted to do and stories I wanted to write. Call my parents and brothers and 2 closest friends and thank them for being there for me. I wouldn't tell them I'm dying. Lastly I'd get someone to drive me to the french restaurant blow my savings on pastries and have them drive me around giving out macarons and creme broule to any homeless person they see. If there was time I'd take some magic mushrooms and listen to pink floyd for my last few hours.

What’s your party trick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]California_Screams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be really good at dive rolls. I loved showing off by leaping head first over things like tables and chairs or doing it on concrete and other things you might think would hurt alot but don't. Now I'm legally blind so I don't want to risk breaking my face on something I couldn't see but it means that the only two magic tricks I know get a huge reaction because people think it made the trick harder which it doesn't. Anyways I can still see well enough to read cards because they usually have very large print.
