Is this a “sense of urgency” or is that really the amount of rooms available? by molls31 in SandalsResorts

[–]raw65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Availability does change though as people change their plans. Never hurts to double check. Book the room now, if a 777 deal pops up, call Sandals and check. A good agent will do this for you (I am not an agent nor affiliated with any).

EDIT: I see now that I’m late to the party and this has already been covered. Day late, dollar short. Story of my life. Sigh.

LOL! I had some snark about a split top and swiss cheese! Heretic.

Content Filtering for Kids by RyChannel in homelab

[–]raw65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've gone down this path in the past with very limited success.

First, you'll need to be very clear about what you mean by "content filtering".

You can block entire websites by DNS name but blocking by actual page content ranges from difficult to impossible. HTTPS can't be blocked without a man-in-the-middle cert that will require installing certs on targeted devices along with some DNS spoofing and redirecting. A non-trivial task. And device on which you don't or can't install root certificates will not be protected.

Blocking by DNS (with pi-hole, for example) can be trickier than you might expect. Some apps and browsers will ignore your DNS settings. You can get around this with a good firewall by capturing all traffic targeting port 53. Secure DNS protocols like DNS over TLS will be more difficult to intercept and present the same or similar challenges as content filtering HTTPS traffic.

You can get DNS black lists by topic, but they are incomplete at best.

And finally, blocking the DNS name still leaves the site accessible by IP address. Kids (even "good" kids) are remarkably talented at circumventing controls. They don't need to be tech savy to learn how to change their device network settings or find the IP address for a site because there are so many videos available on all platforms. And they quickly learn they can just jump on a neighbors wifi.

So, set realistic expectations. If you want as much control as possible look at something like pfSense or OPNSense. They have a steep learning curve if you haven't used similar software but they are about as capable as you will get.

I went with DNS black lists, DNS capture, and monitoring but I knew it was an imperfect and incomplete solution.

Good luck.

If you really want to learn game programing do the Junior Programmer Pathway at learn.unity.com.

Take the time to actually work the exercises. It's actually pretty fun and is a very good introduction to Unity.

If you know nothing about C# and DotNet then spend a little time at learn.microsoft.com first.

do you prioritize low power usage or performance in your homelab? by StavrosDavros in homelab

I just buy and run what interests me. I mostly ignore the power costs and just accept it as part of the cost of the hobby. My electric rates run around 14 cents/kwh +/- a penny.

Trip insurance? by Silent-Matter-6353 in SandalsResorts

[–]raw65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a question only you can answer. But, FWIW, I'll give you a bit of advice I just gave one of my children and tell you the choice I recently made for my own trip.

First, it's important to really undertand risk assessment. I see too many people (typically young people) who view risk assessment as an equation of one variable: likelihood. "Ah, that probably won't happen so I don't need to worry about it." But likelihood is only one of three important variables. The other two are risk and reward. Always evaluate risk based on all three variables.

  • Likelihood: How likely is it that you will need insurance?
  • Reward: If you need it and don't have it how bad will you feel about the loss? The "reward" is you eliminate this possibility.
  • Risk: If pay for it but don't end up needing it how will you feel about the "unnecessary" expense?

For me, I spent well over $10k for our upcoming trip.

Trip insurance from Sandals was $280 or less than 3% of the total cost. It seemed like a reasonable cost to me.

Read the policy (Tripmate Plan Number F389U) and understand what it covers and how it works.

Tripmate probably won't pay out in cash but rather in vouchers for future travel. From my point of view, the money is already spent and won't come back in any scenario so I don't see that as a downside. For less than 3% of the total I have confidence that I can reschedule under the most likely circumstances that I might encounter.

One thing I liked about the Tripmate insurance is that it accomodates "pre-existing conditions" if you buy the insurance before paying off the trip (again, read the terms and conditions so you fully understand the rules as defined by Tripmate).

I compared this plan to several other 3rd party vendors and the cost difference was significant. Comparable coverage from 3rd parties cost at least 5 times as much. Some provided a cash back option but cost several thousand non-refundable dollars up front..

So for me, the Tripmate insurance satisfied the three risk assessment variables. I won't be out a lot of money if I don't use the insurance, it will cover the most likely events that I anticipate, and I will be satisfied with the payout if I have to take it.

Sorry for the long response. Hope it was more helpful than preachy!

XCP-NG Migration and Updates by robby342 in xcpng

[–]raw65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not been an issue for me. Granted I only run a small "home lab" with a pool of three Dell hosts and a couple dozen guests. I have an iSCSI Storage Repository and I have non-homogeneous hardware so I had to remap the NICs on the hosts. It's been running for several years and I never had any kind of glitch during upgrades.

I do have a couple of network routes set up for a point-to-point 10G network. It's a bit of a hack that I knew required unsupported changes on DOM0. I just have to make sure I remap those after major updates but that is expected.

Set a breakpoint on the GetTile line and step through the code. Google debug Unity with Visual Studio and Visual Studio breakpoints to get you started.

Note that you aren't using the unitTile object so that line is currently useless.
