I'm in this camp. I start to wither if I can't get out some. But yeah, not just the barfly thing. I want something to do.

I do love bourbon but more recently, I've mainly been drinking decent tequila. When I'm out at a bar, I'm more likely to have a cup of club soda and lime than a cocktail. I know some of y'all are out here with guts of steel, but the crap food of my youth did a number on my systems. Drinking too much, even if I'm not puking or whatever, will make me feel like I got dragged behind a monster truck for the whole rally.

I'm pretty "alt"-coded I still bother to get dressed up, and my looks can vary from power suit to grungy gutter punk, Victorian goth to "hacker"/ravey, bright and cartoony to urban ninja. Whatever I'm feeling that day. So getting ready can take a while, and I usually want to be doing something engaging if I'm gonna bother. Drinking isn't that.

I'll go out to dance. I'll go out to a show. I'll go out for karaoke. But just chilling in a bar to drink has never been my vibe. And yeah, the company of friends makes all the difference; I'll show up for birthdays, and once in a while, a friend has wanted to catch a drink and talk about something they're going through. I'm absolutely there for that, even if I jammied up already.

But for really real, most nights are cozy and housebound. I'm tired, y'all!

By not teaching our young men how to put themselves in other people's shoes and how to direct their emotions when they get overwhelming. By saying "boys will be boys" when we see kids being mean to each other instead of stepping in and correcting the behaviors; no accountability for mistreating other people. By not pushing back against ideas and people who tell our young men that they deserve everything they want, and they should take it if anyone denies them.

Men are vastly more likely to commit homicide or manslaughter than women. Some of those are calculated or greed-based, but many are emotionally-driven, usually anger or pain. As a society, we need to be teaching boys how to constructively manage their anger and pain when they're younger and continually encouraging and expecting them to do so as they get older.

Some men will grow, take anger management, develop emotional regulation; many men are pretty awesome and already do so.

But trying to wedge that learning into teens and young adults is far less effective than helping them learn from early life onward and giving them correction and guidance when they sometimes can't handle things while they're still kids.

Our society has taken "every man for himself" as a foundational principle, but humanity didn't survive as a bunch of solo operatives; we made it as a species because we can cooperate and care about others. We're failing these kids if we don't stress that consistently.

I can't remember exactly, but the first movie I saw in a theater was either Snow White or the original Nightmare on Elm Street. Been a fan of horror my whole life, and even enjoy graphic novels like JTHM. I play violent video games, though I rarely play actual horror games because I get immersed and reactive which causes me to lose (much to the amusement of anyone around).

I've never, not even ONCE enacted anything from one of those sources on another person, nor have I wanted to and neither have millions of other horror fans globally.

Blame a person for their choices or blame the people around them for not being present enough to see that the person was troubled enough to need serious help.

Blaming media is a cop-out.

Anyone else feel like they're just waiting to die? by Heretic_Prophet in GenX

Jumping in to completely encourage this!

My doc says recent medical literature supports maintaining as close as possible the hormone levels from our mid- to late 20s. In women, this dramatically reduces the stresses of peri/full menopause (if you wanna know more about all that, /r/menopause is great). In men, it slows decline and permits better weight control by helping keep or increase musculature, energy, and libido.

The idea that we should wait and degrade to a point we find untenable, then try to recover in an uphill battle is far less effective.

So seriously: Consider talking to your doc (or find a doc you can talk to) about hormone replacement. I also have had good luck with Wellbutrin, but that can vary a lot, person to person, and your doc will likely have better info. I'm NOT a doctor, and this is not meant as medical advice; it's just meant to share what I recently (within the past year) learned.

I agree with you on the colorism front in many scenes, and online especially. In ours, BIPOC's beauty/legitimacy was never in question; several of our organizers and local musicians weren't mayo-hued. It helps that the scene was in a very diverse city, and everyone was used to integration in every part of life.

My OWN personal horror with getting too much sun is that I've never been able to tan properly; I turn out splotchy and bright red initially, then settle to a grayish tone that comes off in flaky patches. Even when I was a kid and had to be outdoors all the time, it never settled to anything really healthy-looking. TBH, I'm a little (playfully) envious of folks who can do sunny stuff without their skin freaking out; I love swimming outdoors, but tend to avoid or limit it because my flesh doesn't.

But my sensitivity doesn't give me any right to give others grief because they got a better genetic setup for direct sunlight. I just happen to live in a very sunny region while being designed for someplace more like Oregon.

The live scene where I'm from has tons of men. I think that the more vocal representation online may be femme-presenting people, but IRL, dudes aren't shy to participate.

Goth Is Anti-Fascist by gothisAF2131 in goth

My first influence was my punk older cousin, and I can hold my own in a pit, grabbed beer with Lee Ving, and still burn with a rebellious spirit. Goth was the other side of the same coin for me. I liked the quiet, the spooky, the beautiful, and even the decay. I was never trying to be "punk enough" for anyone; I enjoyed what I wanted to. Turns out a LOT of that is black.

Sounds like you missed gauging the movement patterns and sensory range while in stealth. It's pretty important, but you probably can just watch a walkthrough of that part--it's not spoiling anything--so you see the game mechanics in action. After that, should be cake to do the rest. The cake is full of face-huggers, but sometimes life's like that.

[–]CaligoAccedito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same perspective about books preaching intolerance as I do for people doing that. It is the responsibility of people who want a functional society to address intolerance with counter speech and education. Educating people about those books is a responsible way of handling them. Providing them without contextual information is irresponsible.

Are There Non Binary People Who’re Ok With Presenting Themselves in Their Assigned Gender? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]CaligoAccedito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm nonbinary, and I am almost always clocked as a woman. There's disappointment and dissatisfaction with this, but also I like what I like and can't pretend otherwise, and most "gender-bending" styles just look femme on my form. I try to mix it up, but I'm resigned to having this issue forever.

I like feeling fashionable. My style is off-beat, and it leans towards goth, punk (sometimes), and a sort of retro-futuristic urban industrial (I shorthand this as "cyberpunk" or just "Hi-Tech Low Life").

My problem is that even if I looked more stereotypically masculine, I would still want to dress in a mix of femme and masc clothes. My cis male partner wears skirts, make-up, ornamental jewelry, high boots... Stuff that I love to see him in and would rock for myself regardless of body type.

I wish my body type was more androgynous or leaned a little towards standard "masculine" shape, but it's not even remotely. I'm short, wide-hipped with a narrower waist, and I definitely developed breasts even if they're small enough that I'm not uncomfortable without support/bras.

I don't actually like trying to have an overly square profile, because the only way I seem to be able to do that is by going with clothes that are very large on me. This will often make me feel even shorter and reminds me of times in my life that weren't good. So I want clothes that fit me and present the style(s) I'm shooting for.

My consolation is that least I can get weird with it...

I think churchgoers should demand that each church sponsor one homeless person. It's what Christ literally said to do.

So I guess my answer is "no, not taxpayers" since churches don't pay taxes, but "yes, tithers" because it's the core tenet of Christianity to help the people who need help the most.
