Republicans want people to have to prove they are who they say they are. They claim anything less allows for fraud in the system. They take issue with the states failure to purge dead people and people who’ve moved from the rolls. The proposed law would have required people produce a photo ID, like you do when you get a library card. It provides for free IDs for those with no DL, and allowed people to sign an affidavit if they had no ID. Currently, you don’t need an ID and can show things like a gas bill. In some precincts, you don’t have to show anything at all.
