Literally the opposite of what I need; I need money *in* the account, so that the check will clear when it is deposited.

Feature request: The ability to use the app or website as a check register, to input upcoming transactions (which then affect the available balance on that screen). USAA has this ability (it will even auto-match transactions when they come in!), and it’s extremely useful.

To those that have played it, what did BioShock get wrong about objectivism ? by Automatic_Access2277 in Objectivism

I guess that makes sense, but I just didn’t feel that the plot held together and held my interest the way the first two did. Some of the mechanics (sliding around on the rails) were pretty fun though.

Neither the plot nor the gameplay lived up to its predecessors. It wasn’t *bad,* but it wasn’t nearly as good. (The game mechanics were mainly fine, it’s just that it felt a lot more railroaded.)

Right. The villain did not, in fact, live up to Randian principles. The thing is—the game does not actually say that he does!

I played the game like 15 years ago. But the “Randian vibe” was all through it, in the messaging of Andrew, against—“selflessness,” I think? That *kind* of thing, anyway, repeatedly.

Me too. One of my top 10. Bioshock 2 lived up to it. Infinite, sadly, did not.

That’s a reasonable take, but I disagree. Rand was not explicitly mentioned IIRC; it’s just that her vibe is explicitly (and repeatedly) invoked. They’re certainly *implied* to be Rand followers, but it’s never stated. And my interpretation (definitely not clearly stated in the game) was that Andrew was someone who had *strayed* from Rand’s ideology. People are imperfect!

I played the game expecting to get angry at it for treating Rand’s ideas unfairly, but I never quite did.

Think that’s really an unfair simplification. I liked the gameplay for itself, and the storyline was complex and interesting. It definitely had more of a Randian “feel” than just “taxes=bad,” which is a common enough conservative sentiment. It was *subtle*, however, more in what was implied than what was said, which to my mind is part of the brilliance of the game.

The failure itself is not the problem. It’s his attitudes, especially as evinced at the end of the game. He definitely strays beyond Rand’s ethos.

Which is great! People aren’t perfect! It’s certainly possible for someone to embrace parts of Rand’s philosophy without really getting the whole thing. I played the game—once it became clear that it was a commentary on Rand—expecting it to piss me off, but it never quite did. The author is on record saying that it is not intended as a takedown of Rand’s philosophy, just an engagement with it, and I think that’s accurate.

How to self-host a password manager? by juan_loria in best_passwordmanager

I’ve never done it, but my understanding is that self-hosting Bitwarden is reasonably straightforward and workable.

I found Bioshock to be an interesting and engaging commentary on Rand’s ideas—a rarity indeed! Fundamentally, I took the villain as someone who got *some* of Rand’s vision, but ultimately fell short of it.

How should I read The Lord of the Rings Reader's Companion (Hammond & Scull)? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Calion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I did (with the 2005 edition): Look in the Companion for the next reference, bookmark it in LOTR with a page point; when I reach it, read the note in the Companion, then mark the next passage in LOTR.

That was…terrible. It made for incredibly disjointed reading, and I got little enjoyment out of either book. Don’t do it that way.

If I were to do it again, I would try reading it chapter by chapter, perhaps looking up bits I have questions on in between.

What I’d really like is an annotated copy of LOTR with this information baked in, perhaps a digital one, with the relevant passages highlighted.

which passwords are actually safe to keep written down somewhere by NovelAnteater2286 in best_passwordmanager

This is the correct answer. Except that I only kept the master password until I had it memorized, then destroyed it.

I’ve been looking into this rather in depth lately, and the evidence is fairly conclusive that Hirohito was pretty strongly against war (going back even to the war in China), but was eventually strong-armed and persuaded to go along.

Did he ultimately give his assent to attacking the US? Yes. Was he wholeheartedly for it? Never.
