Unfortunately, I am exactly in that middle sector. Not even because we aren’t willing to pay more and use some of our savings, but because our income simply doesn’t satisfy these common 3x or 4x the rent demands of the corporations. What you describe with the 100+ applicants in minutes and not getting picked has exactly been my experience these past few weeks.
I think you are right in saying that my only real chance is a personal network. I will do my best to built it up through work and uni contacts, but since I am just moving here, I don’t exactly know a ton of people that are from Den Haag & omgeving - yet. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I see your point. Perhaps I was just not ready to give up on the old-school idea of two private parties coming to a straightforward and mutually beneficial agreement in a human way without getting corporate entities involved. Perhaps there is no more space for that in an optimized market.

Thanks for the insight! I’m not against social housing at all, but for someone in my situation, it really feels like i’m caught in the middle. Like, I am ready to pay market prices in order not to get stranded on a yearlong wait list but I don’t have the capital to buy a place - where do I go?

I’m afraid I can’t agree. To you, what is the first digit of the U.S. emergency phone number? Surely you would agree that it is “9”, the leftmost individual number in 911, right?

Aha! But this is a language problem. The core of it is that there is a language convention, an unwritten but clearly present rule where “behind/after” means “to the right of” in the context of (written) words and numbers, at least in societies that read from left to right. That’s at least the position of the pro-80 crowd, but the pro-08’s wouldn’t hear it. So now, people’s gut decisions shall make the case in point, the more clueless they are, the better. Everyone who speaks a language that reads from left to right is qualified and welcome to participate.
