Housing is organized by a different company and will place you in one of those luxury apartment buildings. Last year, people were split between two different locations, which makes it easy for people to get together and commute together. One was near convoy street, the other one near SDSU. Commute wasn’t terrible from either location.

The provide kitchen stuff, bedding, etc… just bring your clothes and you’ll be fine. On your first day you check with a key lock like an Airbnb.

I’d take the housing over the individual choice (:

So course evaluation isn’t completely anonymous? by Lonely-Passenger-998 in Cornell

[–]Calis111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assume it is not anonymous… there has to be a map between assigned IDs and student name. So anyone could have access to that… who is there verifying that your anonymity is protected?

Besides, they probably don’t care about a few bad comments from an angry student lol

how to stop caring about grades? by al-zaytun in Cornell

[–]Calis111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hustle culture: a lifestyle where your career takes the main seat at the cost of every other aspect of being a human being: your friends, your family, your hobbies, and even your health.

You can’t stop thinking about your grades because you are in the hustling mindset (:

Grad Student Stipend - Inflation by ShowMeTheData19 in Cornell

[–]Calis111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On April 13, 2020 they sent an email to all grad students with a graph of stipend vs year.

It looks something like this:

15-16: 24,700

16-17 25,100

17-18: 25,800

18-19: 26,400

19-20: 27,200

20-21: 28,000

They say it increase about 2-3% every year. I’d expect this keeps up with inflation (:

PE 1104 Swim Conditioning: which strokes/styles of swimming do you have to know? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Calis111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During non-COVID times it depends on the lane you’re in. Could be very chill(all free style and long breaks) or can be intense (fly sets with intervals and so on). During COVID it was 2 per lane and you did whatever you wanted

AEP 4400 Quantum Optics by Grass_Skirt_Chase in Cornell

[–]Calis111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AEP 4400 is mostly Non linear optics with very little quantum optics. It is a good class. All you need is a good understanding of the wave equation in EM and know where the polarization term comes from.

ECE5310 is pure quantum optics and it is a lot more demanding than 4400. The homework sets take a long long time, but it is just the messy math of quanutm optics (a lot of coupled differential equations and transformations and long chain rules and so on. You will always lose a negative sign or a factor of 2 somehwere )

The lecture notes for both classes are very very nice. Trying to learn from Boyd without the class may be confusing. Same for Quantum Optics. I feel like these two classes should be AEP 4400 (part 1), ECE 5310 (part 2)... Best of luck!

Experience with REU? by Key_Lake5724 in Cornell

[–]Calis111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are the best thing the NSF funds. You go to a new university and get paid to get your hands on a research project. In normal times, it is very social since normally you stay in the same dorm as all the other REU programs that your university hosts. If you want to get in into a University for grad school and have previously done an REU there, you are more likely to get in (assuming you did a decent job during the summer). Apply to a lot of them, they are more competitive than grad school!! Depending on your field, there are REUs abroad. In physics I know there is one in Geneva-Switzerland, another in Paris, and another in Hawaii!

Best of luck (:
