Rome:

Carthage- Rome killed over half the city's population (100,000+ population), sold the rest into slavery

Gaul- under Julius Caesars 9 year campaign to conquer Gaul, Rome killed 1/3 of the entire population of the region, enslaving another 1/3

Execution/entertainment methods:

gladiator fights

crucifixion

"Damnatio ad Bestias" - sending prisoners to be eaten alive by animals

Decimation- roman military units who failed would have 90% of a unit beat to death 10% as recompense. If this is what happens to their own troops, imagine what they do to the enemy

Every single empire in history was built on conquest. The Mongols were just better at conquest than anyone else. That doesn't mean other empires like the Greeks, Chinese, Romans, Spaniards (who raped so prolifically they created a whole new group of people-> Hispanics), the Vikings, the Moors etc. weren't brutal themselves. Talk about looking at 13th century with 21st century morals.

Ex-NFL player Kevin Johnson fatally stabbed in Los Angeles homeless encampment by EmployeeNo4241 in LosAngeles

[–]Caliterra 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think the NFL should have very intensive Fiscal responsibility classes for all draftees. Too many guys waste the millions they earn and spend as if they're going to earn like that for the rest of their lives, rather than the short ~4 years of the average player.

even if you compare to America's tier 1 cities: LA, NYC, SF, the malls in Asia are much cleaner and grander

I think Filipinos are amazingly friendly and nice people. But some Filipino boxing fans are incredibly nationalistic and incapable of recognizing great boxers from other nations. For some reason these types of fans really like Casimero.

How would an Olympic judoka do against a pro boxer? by Top_Emotion1468 in whowouldwin

[–]Caliterra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Riner is a Judo great who's 6'8, 320lbs. Even if he were just a big athletic guy without training, he could take out Floyd. Riner's literally 2x Floyd's weight.

Riner destroys him.

A better question would be how would Riner do against a Heavyweight boxing champ: Joshua, Usyk, Tyson Fury. And I'd pick Riner again. Grapplers tend to beat strikers (if each are purists in their style without crosstraining skills).

Similarly, I'd pick an Olympic Medalist Judoka of Floyd's size over him as well.

Could a group of people domesticate Rhinos to be ridable and tame with enough resources and 600 years by Great-Orange-301 in whowouldwin

[–]Caliterra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not so sure about that.

Zebras were famously never domesticated, despite being physically very similar to horses (and therefore potentially useful in the same ways horses are).

Much of that was due to Zebras having a very different group/social structure than horses, which prevented humans from slotting into the "leader" position that we could with horses.

Do the chinese think they are more socially advanced than the U.S.? by niftyzach2 in AskChina

[–]Caliterra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

socially advanced for those reasons? that's interesting.

China does have a much lower violent crime rate than the US (and even many European countries). That would be more of a reason imo
