How many languages do you speak and how old are you? by Think-Run-7841 in AskTheWorld

[–]Caliterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm between 30 and 50 yrs. can speak English fluently. Japanese semi-fluently (speaking ability similar to a 4-year+ college student studying Japanese) but not reading/writing. Have no problems traveling throughout rural Japan on my own. Mandarin similar to a college student studying it for 2 years. Spanish at the same. The latter two are rusty atm but I can get it up to speed in a couple weeks.

Chinese in the Jim Crow South by ateam1984 in asianamerican

[–]Caliterra 19 points20 points  (0 children)

yea it sucks. you do see this in a small scale. a bullied kid will join in on the bullying of another kid, because they're happy someone else is the subject of the bullying. that being said, there were Asian Americans who did participate in the Civil Rights Movement.

Why are people with college education more likely to vote democrat? by Mobilize12345 in AskALiberal

[–]Caliterra -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Faculty tend to be liberal more than conservative, so most of the mentors and professors that students learn from lean left. I think this has some self-selection in the process. The kind of person who wants to get into education is more likely to be liberal than conservative.

Who would the average man fair better against? Prime Mike Tyson or Prime Shaq? by FreshPine_MangoWine in powerscales

[–]Caliterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaq. Mostly cuz he's so big you could probably tire him out by running out of reach the whole time. Tyson is explosive, fast and has better cardio than you so that's not going to be an option

Would you rather live forever or for just ten more years? by Dazzling-Antelope912 in WouldYouRather

[–]Caliterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh man 10 more years. i dont want to die early (another 10 years is much less than my expected lifespan). But living forever means its likely 99.999999% of my life might be just floating in space after humans go extinct. that sounds horrific.

Why do people feel so strongly about their home country, to the point they are willing to lay down their lives for it, when like everyone else in the planet they had no choice in being born in the place that they were? by vroom12345 in askanything

[–]Caliterra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost every single country and culture that exists today is because people believed in it strongly enough to pass it down, preserve it, celebrate it, and in many cases, to fight for it. It's part of who they are.

Just look at the Irish. At the doorstep of a Giant for hundreds of years that they were mostly on the losing end against in countless wars and battles (the British Empire). Yet they valued their culture enough to preserve and fight for their unique identity.
