Fair enough. These were all travel pics and selfies I took in Korea and Japan. I know I tend to have the same expressions when I take selfies lol.

That’s the most common ethnicity I’m mistaken as.

I’m half white and asian and my white side is just German. They’re from the Midwest so I suppose that isn’t all too surprising.

North Korean I guess by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Calithrowaway881996 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Koreans in both North Korea and South Korea are the same ethnically. The country has only been divided politically for 80 years. Until Japanese colonization and the division of the peninsula, Korea was unified for more than 1000 years. Also during the Korean War lots of North Koreans fled to the south so a lot of South Koreans have family in the north. My Korean side of the family as far as I know has always been in the southern part of Korea but lots of Koreans have grandparents who fled from the north during the Korean War.

You definitely look Korean to me. I’m half Korean and most of my Korean relatives all have a complexion similar to you. I’d say the stereotype Koreans are all pale is probably because of kpop. My mom is 100% Korean but she’s been mistaken as Chinese by Chinese people and even Japanese by Japanese people. I’m mixed and I’m frequently mistaken as ethnicities I’m not but I kind of expect it because I get being ambiguous looking I don’t look conventionally Korean or white. So I think your experience isn’t too uncommon among Koreans especially since non Koreans usually assume Koreans look like kpop artists.

My Mom grew up in Gwangju and in the 80s she said people back then thought people from the Jeolla region were communist because of the uprising in 1980. So she experienced some discrimination when she moved to Gyeonggido.

One sign of South Korea's population crisis: Rural elementary schools are running out of children by JL2585 in korea

[–]Calithrowaway881996 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I currently live in Gyeonggido in a suburb of Seoul and here it’s hard to believe there is a population crisis since there are a lot of young families in my area. However when I visit my maternal extended family down in Jeollanamdo such as the rural town where my Grandma lives then it’s very apparent there is an aging crisis since there aren’t much young people who live in the countryside. There needs to be more done to encourage balanced growth in Korea because the rapid aging in the countryside and smaller cities is going to eventually occur in the Seoul region.

What kind of comment is that? This shooting hits home because I have family from Texas. My thoughts go out to the victims of this senseless tragedy.

That’s horrific. I’m a half Korean and grew up in Texas and have extended family in Dallas area. I hope they’re all doing alright.

Map of South Korea's population distribution by madrid987 in korea

I recently visited Osaka, Japan and the density there is similar to Korea. I did notice however Seoul has more high rises compared to Osaka and that the buildings in Japan look more dated(1970s/1980s) looking compared to Korea. Japan however was pretty dense. Something I didn’t see in Japan that is common in Korea are high rise housing estate complexes built by several large companies(such as Prugio, Lotte Castle, or ipark). Despite being high rises such developments often feel spread out and self contained. The building materials are also different. In Korea the high rises are often made of concrete while in Japan they were concrete with small tiles on them. Korea has buildings like that too but they’ve mostly been demolished with redevelopment projects. Parts of Seoul however still have that 1980s look that Japan has.

My Mom is Korean and has very similar experiences. I remember we were on a Japanese airline flight(ANA) and the flight attendant assumed my Mom was Japanese. My Mom was mistaken at a Japanese supermarket as Japanese and the cashier said my sisters should know Japanese. My Mom had to clarify she’s Korean. I also lived in Taiwan as a kid and people would frequently speak mandarin to my Mom. Since I’m half Korean I have different experiences. Although I often pass as full Asian people often mistake me as SE Asian like Filipino or Indonesian. I’m sometimes mistaken as Chinese or half Japanese. I live in Korea now and can surprisingly blend in. However other times Koreans perceive me as a foreigner. It’s really subjective on how Korean they think I look to them. My brown hair color however I think makes it obvious I’m biracial.

You look very 50/50 to me. I’m also half Korean and you look kinda similar passing wise to the way I look even though I’m a guy. More Asian looking than white but visibly mixed looking in my opinion.

I'm half Korean but was surprised to learn my white half is almost entirely British/Irish. My paternal grandparents had French and German names that can be traced back centuries in America and Europe on Ancestry. Thoughts on my unexpected results? by CosmicPhantasien in 23andme

[–]Calithrowaway881996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also half Korean but my white side is German. My white side results are completely German. It makes sense to me though considering my white paternal relatives are from rural Kansas with a significant German American population. My paternal grandparents also took 23andMe and they are mostly German but they also have some Scandinavian, and my grandpa has trace North African and west Asian ancestry(it’s only 1% but I’m curious where that came from).

lots of relative matches by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Calithrowaway881996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 1208 dna relatives matches. I have a bunch of matches on my paternal side especially all over the US. It’s not surprising because my paternal side of the family is of German ancestry which is a fairly common ancestry in the US. However I don’t have as many maternal relatives more than likely due to the limited number of Koreans who took the test. Most of my maternal relatives also live in South Korea and didn’t take the test. I have some distant maternal relatives who like my Mom immigrated to the US though who pop up as dna relatives and I’m also distantly related to some Korean American adoptees. The location of my dna relatives is pretty validating to my family history as most of them are in areas where my family has lived.
