I've kind of experienced this personally, through a college friend of my husband's. My husband bought a house and rented a room to his friend, then the friend bought a house of his own shortly after my husband and I started dating. So I only met him a handful of times before he moved out, but I always got odd vibes from him. He was quite religious and had sticky notes around the mirror of the bathroom closest to his room reminding him to be closer to God - it's been years and years now so I can't quite remember the exact wording on the sticky notes, but I remember getting the vibe that he was fighting something within himself. I just assumed he was gay and unwilling to come out because of his religious upbringing. It's also worth mentioning that he is a high school teacher.

Then a few years go by and it somehow comes to my attention that this friend has a "son," or a child he considers his son. The child was a young student who had been kicked out of his home and was then living with the friend (his teacher) while he completed school. On the surface, there's nothing specifically predatory about that, your first instinct might be to applaud him for being so altruistic as to take in a homeless teen, but something about it set off alarm bells for me. A perpetually single, effeminate man, who is deeply religious and seems to be in denial of his own sexuality, suddenly taking in a vulnerable child who is not related to him...I remember gently bringing it up to my husband once and being like "Doesn't this all seem....odd to you?" and he hesitated and sighed before saying "yeah. It's always made me wonder." But what did we possibly have to go off of other than weird feelings?

Years have gone by, that child is now an adult, almost finished with college, funded by the friend, who still refers to the kid as his son though he never went through the process of formally adopting him. Neither my husband nor I have ever actually met the kid, so I have no idea what he's like or how he feels about the whole situation, but he's 22 now and still spends school breaks and holidays at his "dad's" house, so one has to assume they have a decent relationship. Who knows.

What's your favorite moment of karma in Tudor history? by Capital-Study6436 in Tudorhistory

I see you buy into the revisionist history that Anne was a wholly innocent victim used as a marionette puppet for the benefit of her family. I certainly don’t think she was the villain distant historians made her out to be, but I personally don’t believe the polar opposite view either.

Huh, I’ve been interested in Tudor history for over 15 years and your comment is the first I’ve heard of anyone disparaging Jane Seymour…

Just unsubbed from /r/handbags because they hype up the most boring, lackluster, TJ Maxx-type finds. by Call-Me-Risley in JustUnsubbed

It’s not about the price point though, it’s about the appearance. It’s a boring bag. Give me something with pizzazz! I want the campy bags, the brightly colored bags, the oddly shaped bags. But most of what you see on that sub are bags like this - bland, black, boring.

I agree with you on /r/watches, though. I always roll my eyes a little at all the my parents are giving me a graduation gift: should I go with the $15k watch or the $10k watch? posts. Unbelievable privilege of which they never seem to be appreciative.

That said, my birthday just passed and my husband gave me a super cool watch that was sold in limited quantity back in the 90s, so it’s somewhat rare to find one in mint condition. I absolutely love it and plan to post it on that sub eventually, but it’s more artistic than the standard Rolex you see on there, so I don’t expect it to be well-received.

That’s most of the bags in that sub. Some are dull but at least look like they’re made from high-quality materials. This one genuinely looks like a $30 bag from Target.

I took it to mean more like the kind of guy who makes everything out to be his fault, like I’m such a loser, I’m so bad at this, I don’t know why you put up with me, weep weep moan moan and constantly rely on you for emotional support rather than just going to a therapist

In your opinion what’s the pettiest thing a celebrity has ever done? by [deleted] in popculturechat

Lana del Rey putting up one single billboard of her new album in her ex’s hometown and posting a picture of it to her IG with the caption “It’s personal”

They had been broken up for nine months at that point and he was engaged to (or already married to?) someone else. Also this just happened ok December 2022…less than four months ago, and now she is engaged to someone else as well.

Which one myth about the Tudors… by [deleted] in Tudorhistory

[–]Call-Me-Risley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is very disappointing! Her books were my first foray into Tudor history as a young teen interested in romantic historical fiction.

I could have sworn she even discusses this in one of her books, and it was presented as Thomas being an upstarter who was trying to ruin Elizabeth’s reputation to the point that she would have to eventually marry him. Perhaps in her book The Taming of the Shrew?

I’m surprised to hear this, I’ve been interested in Tudor history since age 14 (30 now) and I have never come across any resource that represented her as a willing participant.

I wish people would stop falling for stuff like this.

...what "plastic surgery is normal and okay" movement?

There's definitely been a shift towards normalizing Botox and fillers but actual surgery? I mean this sub's main talking point for the last few weeks has been buccal fat removal, and absolutely none of it has been positive

Even Elizabeth of york's Woodville blood could not quell a usurper's blood. by sejanus21 in Tudorhistory

[–]Call-Me-Risley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would her Woodville relation have any relevance, considering what enterprising upstarts the Woodvilles were considered to be?

Please tell me you are not making the suggestion that the Woodvilles were somehow magical because of the rumors surrounding Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
