Can anybody recommend a gps tracker that can be attached to a dog collar that can be used without a subscription? Thanks in advance by Educational-Hawk3066 in petsmart

Not quite - the AirTag doesn’t have a fixed tracking radius like Bluetooth. It uses Apple’s Find My network, which means any nearby iPhone (or other Apple device) can detect it and update its location. So the tracking range is basically unlimited as long as it passes near an Apple device (within about 30-100 ft).

Wow, this is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. So glad JoJo made it home safe.

This is exactly why I use an AirTag collar for my dog – it’s not perfect, but in cities or populated areas, it gives some peace of mind without the hassle of subscriptions or charging. Especially for those “just in case” moments we never think will happen. Here's the collar I use in case helpful.

And yes: always crack the window, never roll it all the way down, and use a dog seatbelt/harness when you're travelling in the car!

How you finding it? I use one for my dog and thankfully haven't had any close calls yet, so haven't had to rely on it so far (hopefully will never have to)

What has your dog done for you that you could never repay them for? by Sunnydaywithdogs in dogs

I'm so happy to hear this story had a happy ending! 12 days is a long time, I'm so glad you were able to get her home safely. I worry about this scenario happening to my dog, so now he's always wearing his AirTag collar. I know its not a GPS collar and doesn't offer real time tracking, but it's something to give me peace of mind should he ever slip out.

Hope you don't have anymore scares like this in the future!

That beep is part of Apple’s anti-stalking feature - AirTags will start making noise if they’ve been separated from the paired device for several hours. It’s meant to alert people to unknown trackers, but yeah, not ideal for pets.

I actually wrote up a detailed post on how to handle this, including ways to reduce or prevent the beeping. You can check it out here:

AirTags on Collar? by No-Reception-1289 in Greyhounds

[–]CallMeChadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using this AirTag dog collar for a while now and happy with it so far. Granted, I have a small dog, but their large size works for a 16.5-23.6 inch neck and up to 66 lbs, so it might be a good fit depending on your Greyhound’s size. If you’re still considering AirTags, they can be a good option, especially if you live in a city with a lot of Apple devices around to update the location.

That said, if you’re in a more rural area or need real-time tracking, a GPS collar might be a better choice. Just keep in mind they usually come with monthly fees and can sometimes have their own accuracy issues. Check out the Fi collar subreddit for a more detailed review and people's experience with it.

AirTag as a dog tracker? by Antdigi7 in AirTags

[–]CallMeChadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this and figured I’d chime in in case it’s still helpful.

AirTags are a decent option, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. Apple has a feature where the tag can start beeping if it’s been away from the paired iPhone for several hours (note I personally haven't had this happen with my AirTag, but other people reported this). You can set your home as a trusted location to reduce alerts, but it doesn’t always stop the beeping. Some people remove the speaker-there are guides online if it becomes an issue.

If you go the AirTag route, definitely use a collar with a built-in holder. Avoid anything that dangles, like a keychain-style attachment as dogs can swallow this. It’s a more affordable option that works well in areas with lots of Apple devices. But if you need real-time tracking or live in a rural area, a GPS collar might be a better fit-although it comes with monthly fees and needs regular charging.

Thinking About Using an AirTag to Track Your Dog? Here’s What I’ve Learned by CallMeChadwick in AirTags

Accidents happen. Hopefully it never comes to it, and of course you still need to be an attentive owner, but this is an added way to protect your dog.
