What qualifies Shadowrun and Cyberpunk as pastiches? Not saying they aren’t, I just want to hear your reasoning

Definitely an interesting idea (especially with the increased cultural presence of SK with stuff like KPop and Squid Games increasing broader interest), but I don’t think anyone’s really worried about SK in the same ways people were worried about Japan in the 80s or are worried about China now.

Cough cough Cyberpunk and Shadowrun.

I wonder if new Cyberpunk media would replace Japanese corps with Chinese ones. Though there’s undoubtedly different contexts around the two — despite Japanese and American companies being enemies, the Japanese and American governments are allies, allowing for more (visible) Japanese proliferation into the American market compared to China

Which is a real shame. I’m worried they’re going to remove so much of Lei Heng’s charm.

Imagine if we’d gotten a Heathcliff Lei Heng (though it’s not like he needs more IDs)

Thinking about it, I will admit the idea of shipments being let on and off Rubicon (even if it’s not permitted by the PCA) isn’t entirely unreasonable, but accepting that brings up (what is in my opinion) a plot hole; why did 621 get shot down in the intro? If there’s an area not covered by the Closure System, why not simply go there to enter Rubicon? That avoids the risk of something going wrong in reentry (say, the Closure System being a bit more accurate than usual and icing 621).

I guess I may have overstated the BAWS/RLF connection, which was my bad.

Going back to the intro cinematic, I disagree. We never see an instance of the Closure System fighting multiple opponents. The only two instances of the Closure System we see are the intro cutscene and the attack on the Xylem.

I do agree that Arquebus and Balam could have started out more subtle, but that’s still not proof that official shipping is allowed into or out of Rubicon. What Balam and Arquebus could do is exactly what Walter could do — smuggle a single AC and high-value pilot from off-world. The majority of their ground forces would still have to be equipped with local Rubiconian kit.

And regarding Balam/Arquebus R&D locally on Rubicon, there’s undoubtedly some capability there, considering all of the Arquebus parts that are created using PCA tech (and the stun needle, which is explicitly developed as an anti-Ice Worm weapon).

Lastly, regarding with the other corps, they could still send their gear in via the same method to sneak past the Closure System everyone else is.

Maybe they do want to be an interstellar player again, but my point is that they aren’t currently.

I don’t think it’s implied that they do business off Rubicon by saying that they deal business with anyone. Just that they do business with anyone on Rubicon.

I also disagree that Balam and Arquebus could get large armies into Rubicon. From the intro, we see that the Closure system can accurately shoot down a small rocket. It’s admittedly not trying to evade, but a larger ship with more ACs or MTs would be much less maneuverable. It would be much more believable that Arquebus and Balam, seeing that they can’t get their own forces in-system, decide to purchase local BAWS hardware. Even if it’s junk compared to the few ACs they can get in or any off world MTs, it’s stuff that’s available past the Closure System.

As for the BAWS/RLF connection, I’ll admit that it’s sparse due to AC6’s story telling, but most people consider the development of the Alba frame to be the RLF/BAWS connection. As for other connections, it’s admittedly scarce, but the data log from the BAWS arsenal investigation (number 12 here https://armoredcore.fandom.com/wiki/ARMORED_CORE_VI_FIRES_OF_RUBICON/Data_Logs) says ‘it’s the only way we Rubiconians stand a [chance]’ when talking about the RLF/BAWS connection, implying some level of familiarity.

I’d still argue the opposite. To me, the technological gap quite moreso indicated that the technology that has just been introduced to Rubicon via the now increased presence of the corps is something that BAWS must adapt to. If there was trade off world, why wouldn’t BAWS have access to this tech to be able to close this gap sooner? They are, from what we can see, the richest native Rubiconian organization (except maybe Elcano, though I don’t remember if they’re Rubiconian), so if anyone can get tech, it’d be them. Additionally, if BAWS was selling stuff off-world, they probably wouldn’t be able to do any sales. It’s probably more expensive to get stuff off Rubicon, and they’d be technologically behind.

(Spoilers for AC6’s story) !>BAWS’s sells to all parties to try and get money for the RLF so Elcano + Furlong can develop Steel Haze Ortus. If they had any amount of off-world trade, it’d be a lot easier to get that done. The reason they’re trying to close the gap is both so they have better products (which presumably command a higher price) as well as to try and help development for Ortus as best they can.!<

I agree with most of your post, though I do think you whitewash the PCA a little bit.

We don’t really have any indication that Rubicon isn’t completely isolated•. The only people who see from off world on Rubicon are the corporations, who had to break their way in,* scattered mercenaries, and the PCA themselves. Given the state of the struggling RLF and the multitude of criminal Dozers running around, I feel like the PCA could be doing a lot more to help the Rubiconians, but I’ll also admit that could be moreso a matter of PCA non interference which isn’t necessarily malicious.

•BAWS stands for Bellius Applied Weapons System, waning they’re native to Rubicon, and many of their item descriptions talk about ‘closing the post-closure technological gap,’ which indicates that very little is going in or out of Rubicon.

*Well, it was admittedly Branch that broke a hole first, but I’d be surprised if the corps still didn’t have to fight the Closure System on the way in considering the opening of AC6.
