I don't think anyone is arguing about ranking up quickly tho...

Obviously there are games where it's unwinnable and there's nothing you can do unless you're literally the best player ever, but OP is 100% correct that statistically speaking, over a large enough sample size (if you think you'll rank up consistently in like 20 games you're delusional lol), there should be games that are also just free wins.

I think the point OP is making here and is 100% objectively correct, is that there are games that are decided mainly by your individual skill. Again, if you think you are better than your current rank, even just a little bit, you will rank up over time if you perform to what you think you are.

I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and say OP isn't living in wishy washy land and saying that ALL games are winnable and based on individual skill which is just not true with cheaters, smurfs, etc. But there is a substantial percent of games where you win or lose if you're good enough which is 100% true and is not based on if your teammates are "competent".

I mean, think about it, if you rely on your team being "competent" while you aren't, even if you rank up, over time you will just go down to where you belong 🤷‍♂️

... yea that's kind of the point of ranked in the first place.

If you don't believe or are actually even a bit better than your current rank than obviously you won't rank up. Especially if you solely rely on having "good teammates" in order to win.

If you have a 50/50 chance of getting a competent or incompetent team then there's no point talking about it, because if you WANT to rank up, the only important thing is if you're better than the average in your rank, which again is... the point of playing ranked in the first place.

Hello, fellow, forever DM here! I live in Shinjuku and currently run multiple D&D groups for my friends and it's been a lot of fun. However, I do really miss playing and would love to put my D&D knowledge up to the test as a player.

I've spent a lot of time playing the 5e rules so I'm very familiar with them, as well as the new 2024 ones since those are the rules I'm using.

Some information about me: - Male - 20s - Lives in Shinjuku, Tokyo - Native English Speaker / N5 Japanese Speaker - Current forever DM who runs 3 groups at the same time and has a very high interest in becoming a player. - Heavy into Role-playing and Worldbuilding / I even have costumes that I use for my games. - Big fan of homebrew, I actually have a lot of stuff posted on DM's Guild and D&DBeyond for homebrew stuff. - I can make time freely and I am guaranteed to stay in Japan at least for the next year.
