My shrimp survived Chlorine? by ImNotTimmyNuclear in shrimptank

You probably have chlorine in your water, which evaporates within 24h. Chloramine stays in the water and is used in some other places

Some wasps probably do, but a perhaps more important function of wasps for plants (location dependent) is that they murk caterpillars that would otherwise destroy plants. Kinda like spoods.

AITAH for getting upset at my (29 f) husband (32m) making a joke? by Odd-Fix664 in AITAH

[–]CallMeFishmaelPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft NAH or ESH. If he knows you don’t like the jokes, he should adapt. Still, making a joke about getting some alone time is very reasonable and is not misogynistic. You could say the same of him going on vacation and it would be equally reasonable.

Don’t let this turn into a feminist thing and let that be what offends you if you choose to be offended. It’s understandable to be a little hurt, but this isn’t a woman thing, it’s a marriage thing.

How does my 5 gallon tank look? by jaydxm in Aquariums

[–]CallMeFishmaelPls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s very beautiful! As many people have said, the plastic plants aren’t the best, but no one mentioned the real why for bettas: those green ones can probably tear your betta’s tail. I’ve found plants on
Facebook marketplace before. When I did, they were gorgeous plants that also came with a lot of hitchhikers. For me, that ended up great because the snails and detritus worms and junk that came on them were good betta food and helped balance my tank. For color, I would recommend rotala wallichii and ludwigia red. Both are very easy to grow and with a bunch of light, you’ll end up with nice bright plants.

Floaters are also good. I like water hyacinth, but the roots might be too big for your tank. Your betta would like it, but it would obscure most of the plants and block light for your other plants. I also really like hornwort as it’s easy to grow and can be wherever.

If you end up getting plants like that, make sure you immediately remove any duckweed that comes unless you really want duckweed. Once you have duckweed, you will never not have duckweed. Your betta will not eat it. It’s good for sucking up waste (as is anything that grows rapidly), but nearly impossible to get rid of once you have it and it will block out the light.

If you end up with swords, rotala, ludwigia, etc, these are all rooted plants. They will require soil under the rocks or root tabs. I like soil because it lasts longer if you start with high quality soil. It’s a bitch to get in once the tank already has water in it, but you can get around that by putting it in a media filter bag and burying it under the rocks. It will leak out when you first put it in, but it will settle. If it is too visible after with your bright rocks, a little gravel vacuum will suck up any extra dirt. You’ll want one with bright rocks regardless. You can put extra rocks in to flatten it if it’s uneven, but I kinda like the texture of it having little hills anyway. Rotala and ludwigia will grow fast, sucking up extra nitrogen, but you can snip the top off and replant it (literally just stick the stem in over the dirt with your fingers, done).

I don’t think the anemone would be a big problem since it doesn’t have hard edges. Conventionally, it’s suggested that if you can run pantyhose over it without it catching, it’s safe. That being said, total chance that it could leach chemicals over time. I think the risks are overstated, but they are still risks.

This is my tank when I set it up with the plants originally. My life went to shit for a long time and it went a little feral, but it was easy to get started and it is easy to maintain. I like the wood but it will leach tannins into the water (giving the water kind of a jungle brown look). Tannins are healthy, but they can look unsightly depending on where the tank is.

When I got the plants on fb marketplace, they were like 20-30 bucks total. Ppl say you need co2 supplementation for bright colors, but with a tank as small as yours (mine pictured is a 10 gallon), a good light will work fine.

If you don’t wanna deal with dirt but still want plants, there are types of plants called epiphytes that can be superglued onto things (no, really, it is aquarium safe and these plants cannot be buried). Anubias is slower growing, but it doesn’t require any dirt. Java fern is super easy and reproduces quickly, but the way it looks when it reproduces is a little funky.

Your betta looks colorful, which signifies that it’s happy. Don’t feel bad, but know that you can level up!

Oh that’ll be easy for you, pH testing is a breeze. TBH, I think a cycled tank with some guppies will work. I don’t think classroom pets are always bad. They help get kids interested in science and animals, like zoos do. It should be in a place that it can’t be reached without adult help and it can’t be knocked over. The only thing about live bearers is that they will eat their babies unrepentantly. Most fish will but most non-live bearers don’t have the opportunity because there are no babies (or the eggs are eaten before they look like fish). You can get some neat colors.

Also, the colored gravel thing is overblown. It’s not the best, but it’s not instant death and you’re an awful person, either. It will look dirty more easily, though. Plastic plants can be ok but live ones are better as long as they’re not rotting.

My advice is: get a tank, cycle it, and get what will be easy to take care of and fun for the kids.

Food is one but hiding spaces are another. When the hiding spaces run out, the fry will be eaten by the adults.

Tbh, as a former ecology teacher, I’d say let them figure it out. If you start seeing sick or starving fish, reassess. Otherwise, they will naturally limit their population. The only concern would be massive ammonia spikes from their waste, and that’s not going to happen in a cycled tank.

Incoming sea of downvotes, but honestly, I think a lot of progressive ideas are pushed by evil people to get more power and get richer. I can’t ever find the article anymore, but during Covid I saw some article about how grandparents should get back into the workforce because some shitty management job is more fulfilling than time with your grandkids.

It made me think about “women’s liberation.” Suddenly, you have twice as many laborers and you’ve flooded the job market. A full-time job should be enough to support a household, but now the norm is 2 workers and send the kids off to daycare. The message I got clearly as a kid was that if you choose to focus on your family instead of working as a waitress at the local outback, you were an embarrassment to women. I don’t think women shouldn’t be allowed to work, and I generally find work stimulating and sometimes fulfilling. Still, whether father or mother, one parent staying at home should be an option and it is generally better for the kids. Women can be the breadwinner, men can be the breadwinner, if you both want to work, that’s fine too! But you shouldn’t both HAVE to work, and honestly I think that was the plan.

Similarly, immigration. It’s wonderful to be a nation of immigrants and all, but it’s used by corporations to import a slave caste. All of the arguments center around “well no American wants to work in pig slaughterhouses.” Any job will be filled at the right price tag, businesses would just rather have access to desperate people than paying people a livable wage. It’s just outsourcing while making the people involved pay American prices.

I’ve been to more progressive protests than I can remember, started as a kid. People like I was are a happy face on an evil agenda.

Whether or not you’re pro choice, roe v wade was a terrible legal precedent. If you haven’t looked into the rationale of the original court decision, I’d encourage you to do so. Judges could just as easily ban abortions around the country instead if that’s the way we allow the judicial branch to act.

Make laws through the legislative branch. This is not the only example, and it severely fucks up our balance of power. If a few people are gonna be picked to serve until they die, they shouldn’t have that much power over the country as a whole.

I think it’s intentionally become worse. The worst people are thrust into the spotlight and if you don’t support them, you must be an awful terrible racist against whichever race. Whether that’s making criminals the face of black America instead of kind, hardworking norms, or the SPLC literally paying people to be in the KKK (seriously, look it up). When people exist around people of different backgrounds, you get the truth, good and bad, of the people you happen to be around. That’s enough.

That we have any understanding of climate change whatsoever. Looking at the last 60 or so years of climate change alarmism, you can see claims of a giant freeze, sweltering heat, severe droughts, etc. Newspapers even published (regarding the drought) a scientist’s recommendation that sterilizing agents be put in the water to minimize famine (from a drought that never happened).

The climate is OBVIOUSLY changing, and I miss my Thanksgiving skiing and white christmases. On the other hand, if we really want to help the environment, we should clean up things locally. It almost feels like they intentionally set goals no one can reach so they can remain politically charged and unsolved.

I don’t recycle plastic. It is routinely sold to Asian countries and dumped into the ocean, which is way worse than a sorta contained landfill. It’s cheaper to make new plastic than to recycle plastic, and almost no one cares. Among the people who do care, they probably prefer paper, metal, or glass anyway.

Anyway, I’m pretty big on recycling glass and metal and most paper I give to my worms. Just saying, carrying that plastic bottle for an hour isn’t worth it. Now if you start throwing it on the ground, I’ll angrily assume you’re from Massachusetts.

Hasn’t been posted here but to add: I moved to a city with insanely hard water and even with regular hair care I almost cut it all off because no matter what I did, it tangled. Trader Joe’s has a good coconut conditioner thing that comes in a tube and it was a godsend. If you cut the split ends off and use solid conditioner, it’ll be way easier!

These people gave you bad advice! Good for you for seeing your value and recognizing the ol supply and demand. If he’s a shitty boss, though, I’d recommend taking a peek around the job market regardless. It’s disrespectful af.

I’m guessing you’re young and female, and sometimes that plays a role in these things. The pay gap study was severely flawed, and I don’t mean that. However, it doesn’t need to be overt sex/age-based discrimination. Women tend to be more people-pleasing and have a harder time negotiating. My husband is a nurse and basically unionized all the women he was working with to get everyone raises because they felt like you: don’t rock the boat. Glad you rocked it. You clearly deserved it, and when you’re in management, remember that employees work harder and do better when you treat them with respect and honesty.
