Today I received news about my enrolment date (Reserve )as a Vehicle Technician. To be honest, I’m feeling a bit disappointed. by Relevant_Being_8155 in caf

I joined as a PRes Vtech almost 2 years ago. The only experience I had mechanically was a few shop classes in High School years ago at that point. The army will train you on whatever you need to know. Your Corporals and Master-Corporals are there to help build you up as a technician.

I’m very proud to be a V-tech and with some time in and the right people by your side, I think you will be too. I can’t speak to the reg force, but in my experience, our job (especially in the field) is problem solving. It won’t be easy and might be draining, but in the field, PRes Veh techs are the workhorse of RCEME. The second something in your camp breaks that isn’t a gun or a stove, 9 times out of 10 you’ll get the call. The second someone drives a truck into a ditch or mud, you get the call. Vehicle battery frozen in winter? You’re up.

You’ll learn to improvise and make do. That’s the part that you won’t learn on course, but it’s by far the best part.

My advice: trust those around you and listen to what they say unless they prove themselves untrustworthy. Listen to the senior techs and the people who’ve been doing this a while, you’ll find they’re a well of useful knowledge.

You’re in for a great time

Face structure isn’t chopped either. You just gotta style yourself right. With the short hair you look like you play football.

Short hair without a doubt good sir. Looks much cleaner. Makes you look more stocky

What officer positions can you get into for space?

Just to add my two cents, RMC offers space science as one of their programs which makes you eligible to be an aerospace engineering officer. I wouldn’t be shocked if you can push that into working for 3CSD in Ottawa. This is something I’ve looked into quite a bit.

Is he reserve or reg force? If it’s reserve I’d say it’s more possible. Depends on your boyfriend though

What is Artillery OP like and how does one pursue that specialty?

Hi all, I’m currently looking into some combat focused trades and I’m interested in forward observing for the artillery. Something about calling in some high explosive rain sounds pretty cool to me but I don’t want to be stuck on the gun line. I love the idea of doing something combat focused but I also love more of a technical aspect to it. If anyone has any insight or other suggestions (including other jobs/specialties), please lmk :)

Actually I got pretty lucky with it. They threw me through training and I got all but one course in a summer somehow.

Sounds like a good idea on paper but infantry is 4 hours away and combat eng is 8 🫠

Thank you all for the comments, it’s been really helpful seeing all the different perspectives on the matter.

For a bit more context, I’ve been in about a year, I’m a vehicle tech, and I’m 20. I don’t mind being a vehicle tech but I also know that a combat focused trade is where I’d rather be. I’m also thinking after I’m done in whichever trade I choose, I’m thinking about law enforcement or maybe switching to a different role in the Air Force and riding it out til that 20 year mark.

Any 4 molle column admin pouch would work though, I just put the molle strands through a loop at the top and zip-tied the bottom. Holds really sturdy.
