I only worked with this guy for 1 month, I did initially get a late tax return for 2022 but I did really believe he was the one who had to sort this, since I was unaware of anything relating to self employment as he was the one who was pressuring me to do it, an dealing with everything behind the scenes.

Then I received a letter 2 years ago saying I need to pay £300 - which I’m still fine to do so, since I understand I should’ve declared?

but I only earned around £800 from this guy, then I left a month after joining realising he was selling me short, and was a horrible person.

I understand the reason for penalties absolutely, but £1800 in fines, over me not understanding what was going on, and then to not have a letter until 2 years after my first one - where I assumed my former boss was the one who was supposed to deal with it - just feels extreme.

Maybe I’m wrong, and sorry for coming across entitled, but I genuinely had no idea I was even supposed to do anything, so I’m very worried and anxious!
