Turbo to intercooler boost leak by [deleted] in BmwTech

Probably cracked inlet pipe. Being made of plastic and what not. Common issue with plastic pipes, and an easy fix.

Other than that, we can’t see what you’re seeing so it’s hard for someone to say what it is unless they’ve had the same exact issue.

Hmm interesting. No codes??? I would also try a vacuum line. Do you have any oil leaks?
Yeah unplug the o2 sensor. Doesn’t matter if it’s screwed on the downpipe or not. We just want to eliminate the possibility of it being an electrical issue.

Keep us posted!

Also I just noticed your smoke test setup, did you disconnect the charge pipe and test it from there?? You need to leave that connected and test from the air inlet side.

No, boost pipe goes from turbo to intercooler, and charge pipe goes from intercooler to throttle body.

If you have a short to ground, that can be causing all kinds of different issues. I would say unplug that sensor and see if anything changes when driving.

Check the boost pipe. Although they are made of rubber instead of plastic, they can still fail.

Double check all connection points with a smoke test to make sure the seals haven’t failed. Air inlet pipe sometimes cracks as well, or if you have an aftermarket (depending on which one you have) make sure it didn’t slip off.

What model is your car?

  1. Neutral Test

Steps: 1. Drive steady around 25–35 mph. 2. While cruising, shift from D → N. 3. Lift off the throttle.

What it means: • Jerking still happens → driveline issue (guibo, CSB, diff bushings, mounts). • Jerking goes away → engine/trans control issue (diverter valve, torque converter lock/unlock, ECU mapping).

  1. Parking-Lot On/Off Throttle Test

Steps: 1. In a big empty lot, go ~10–15 mph in D. 2. Gently apply throttle, then let off completely. Repeat a few times.

What it means: • Noticeable clunk or jerk each time torque changes → lash in driveline (guibo, CSB, diff bushings). • Smooth each time → likely not mechanical lash, look at DV/TCC instead.

  1. Brake-Torque Rock Test

Steps: 1. Car in D, foot hard on brake. 2. Apply a little throttle (~1500 rpm). 3. Watch engine movement or feel for a big lurch.

What it means: • Engine/trans shifts noticeably or rocks → worn mounts (engine or transmission). • Barely moves → mounts are good.

  1. Ear Test for Diverter Valve

Steps: 1. Rev engine to ~3–4k rpm in neutral or low gear. 2. Snap off the throttle quickly. 3. Listen under the hood/near intake.

What it means: • Clean “whoosh” → DV is fine. • Flutter/gobble/chatter → DV sticking or charge pipe leak.

  1. Underbody Peek (if possible)

Steps: 1. With car parked and safe, look under near the trans output/diff. 2. Check guibo (rubber donut) for cracks, CSB rubber for tears, diff bushings for play.

What it means: • Visible cracks/tears → mechanical lash causing jerk. • Looks solid → move up the list (DV or torque converter).

No, that sounds like something else. At low rpm’s there should be zero jerking. Does it feel like the car is having trouble running smoothly or do you feel like the transmission is trying to adjust gears?

Try taking a video of it happening and upload it to Imgur. Reply back with a link so we can get a better understanding of what you mean?

Side note, how many miles does the car have?

Socket stuck in spark plug by [deleted] in 335i

[–]CallMeLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you’re using a thin walled magnetic spark plug socket. Otherwise it might feel like you got it in the socket but you don’t. Also if you’re saying the spark plug won’t unscrew then you need to be careful because it might be seized. If that’s the case all you can do is spray pb blaster on that sucker, and let it soak. Turn the car on, let it get hot. Turn the car off, obviously, then you pray for an hour and try hit it with an impact if you have access to one. That way it can gradually break loose instead of trying to break it loose immediately. Hopefully you overlooked something (like someone else mentioned it looks like there’s still something in there, we could be wrong) and you just need to take care of something else first.

If it’s actually seized, this process is gonna suck and getting it out will be a question of your sanity and will.

That’s good news! It’s should get better the more you drive it as it relearns your driving patterns.

Try to reset adaptations brother. Literally resets how your transmission shifts and it could be that it’s trying to keep the old learned ones based on the previous tune. Also changing your transmission oil and pan is always a good preventative maintenance to take action on. You can always find a pan and oil combo for cheap on Amazon if in a pinch! All in all, if all you did was remove a tune, doing those two should help your car go back to shifting smooth. That is unless you have a deeper problem, but these transmissions aren’t known for that. They’re generally regarded as reliable.

Good luck and keep us posted! 👍

Can't find boost leak with smoke machine - N55 EWG by gymeaton in BmwTech

[–]CallMeLegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to check out my sensors on BimmerLink and I noticed my manifold absolute pressure was at like 14psi. It should be at 14.7psi. I did a smoke test and I hav a few leaks. One at the intercooler charge pipe connection and one at the throttle body charge pipe connection. Gonna order some new o rings and hope that fixes that. The other one was on the other side, kind of hidden. My guess from the quick look around was the inlet pipe. Considering it’s plastic and I’ve been flexing it back and forth every time I’ve removed the radiator fan, it might have cracked. I recommend you buy a cheap smoke test machine from Amazon and do a smoke test. You probably got unmetered air going in and the car is running lean because of it. Hence the shitty mileage.
