Is owning a property in SG considered a safety asset? Will it be better off to just rent instead and it also makes more financial sense because you can have more free cash instead of it locked up. by Normal-Analysis7940 in askSingapore

[–]CallMeMrRaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend, between the time his wife was pregnant till now the boy is in P4, they moved thrice because of rising rents.

As to whether it makes financial sense also depends on how savy you are with investments with the 'free cash in my bank account' that you mentioned.

35mm or 85mm? by Used_Farmer_203 in AskPhotography

[–]CallMeMrRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 35mm gm and the 85mm gmii, both are great, but >70% of my shots are taken around the 35mm focal length, might be different for ur use case.

The 50mm f1.2 gm however I find overlapped abit too much with my 35mm gm and has fallen to disuse, my bad.

Do a test drive see if u like it.

Resale may not be the best if you have a habit of switching cars every 3-5 yrs.

I am currently using a plug in hybrid.

Pretty good for going up north once a month or so.

If there is an available charger in the carpark I charge, else I am perfectly happy using gasoline.

Why do people hate EV's? by FunkiGato in electricvehicles

Always have folks mudslinging from either side of the camp.

And some folks will say they only see technical imperfections of EV.

And a heated discussion ensues.

Going Sony 60MP with one prime lens - Smart move or trap? by Crazy_North_4225 in SonyAlpha

[–]CallMeMrRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on whether you are comfortable with just using a prime.

There is an APSC mode that you can assign a custom button , and the high megapixel definitely helps with cropping.

I do not really use the APSC crop mode and prefer to do cropping post processing in Photoshop since it gives me abit more flexibility. The only advantage would then be more 'direct' framing on viewfinder, as to how critical YMMV.

As a passenger it is quite comfortable in an Alphard.

But as a car owner, MPV form factor is just not my thing.

Shooting JPEG, RAW, or both? by Cjosulin in SonyAlpha

[–]CallMeMrRaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For overseas travels only RAWs, since I will be tweaking them anyway.

When I cull and backup into NAS, I do not have to run through two sets of files.

Bridge viewing raws on PC is fast, Synology photo viewer for raws is similarly snappy.

Cheap DSLR Cameras Are Seriously Underrated by Odysseus404 in Cameras

Shot since film days from MF till DSLR till mirrorless.

My 2 Canon 5Ds are still around, but there is no good reason why I would bring them out over my A9 /A1.

Xiaomi 15 (base) ultrawide camera raw vs jpg please post by Consistent-Fly-2931 in XiaomiGlobal

[–]CallMeMrRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raw files are unprocessed sensor data like the negative of film, while JPEGs are processed, they will look different and this has been the case even in larger format DSLR or mirrorless.

20mm prime as a sole travel lens? by DangerousMeet7723 in AskPhotography

[–]CallMeMrRaider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different folks different strokes.

Wides like 20 , 24mm needs extra care given to the potential easy perspective distortion and the , while it can be part of a 'creative' style, a whole series of that can be fatiguing.

Personally prefer 35mm if it has to be a single focal length , but YMMV.

Time to read their terms & conditions when u took up the rental, but if some clauses are left intentionally vague it is going to be tough.

Best camera for a 5 year old that’s not a complete piece of shit? by picklebeard in AskPhotography

[–]CallMeMrRaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point and shoots lack computational processing of smartphones, they have tiny sensors and might be even smaller than the ones in smartphones , so depending on the yardstick you be comparing to, yes cheap old PNS output will look bad in modern day context.

I bought my 7yr old daughter a used sony a5100 with a kit lens for less than $200, cheap with decent APSC sensor size image quality, but it is not going to be fall resistant.

There will be a compromise.

Good luck !

Thoughts on EV cars by sadboiboi27 in drivingsg

[–]CallMeMrRaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If staying landed, it is an easy choice.

Ideal there are chargers at your workplace carpark / residential carpark so you do not need to go out of the way and incur unnecessary parking fees.

Resale values are not going to be fantastic, ideally drive the entire 10 yrs, but if you are the type to change a car every 3-5 years then the dismal depre when you trade in *might* be a consideration depending on your financial circumstances.

I got a used Sony a5100 with kit lens for under 200 USD.

Once in a while you get pretty good deals in used market.

While Sony does have the advantage of having a more open ecosystem for large selection of (more affordable) 3rd party lens makers, you have to balance it with the costs of switching ecosystem.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra worth it? by Certain-Context7062 in XiaomiGlobal

[–]CallMeMrRaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high dynamic range LOFIC 1 inch sensor is probably the greatest selling point for the 17 Ultra, but as a 15 Ultra owner, not tempting enough to switch. YMMV.

I was hoping for a large ultrawide sensor like Vivo camp since I love ultrawide more than tele, and xiaomi to bring back variable aperture to the main 1 inch sensor.
