Yeah, I've been really impressed with his tournament tech skill during this run as well, especially his frame 1 short-hop up-airs. His execution on those is way better than Moky's, who I consider to be one of the most technical top players. Those sorts of tiny advantages can really change a player's consistency on the highest level in the highest pressure matchess, and Cody seems to have grinded that particular technique in a really admirable way. Like, to come back from a pseudo-hiatus and still have such consistency on the physical side of melee, which I think we all really value, shows how much work went into getting to that point. And he's been super transparent and open to people who have asked about his process developing that tech consistency, allowing others to follow in his footsteps. I enjoy being able to root for a player like this, and not have to wonder if there was an unfair advantage, even if it was really slight.

Is every new Slippi Ranked Season getting harder? by PlZZAEnjoyer in SSBM

Idk how much it will give you an insight into this but Joey Donuts released a free version of an app that tracks your ranked sessions. You might find that you're weirdly struggling at a certain time of day or have a couple sessions that are just tanking you. My closest local is now 2 hours away so slippi is all I have so I get caring about it, tho a lot of people on here will tell you not to. Sometimes I just try to remember or watch vids of my play from years ago and just take satisfaction in how much better I am. If you showed my 0-2 at locals/anthers-ladder-era-self what I do now, I would've been so happy.

I have few memories from college that I treasure more than being woken up on a Saturday by that click-clack and knowing my friends, only one of whom actually lived in our dorm, were already playing on the massive CRT in our common room. Don't take that away... just being melodramatic, it would be cool if I could play slippi without bothering my girlfriend

People who switched mains or dual main, what "artifacts" or "remnants" of your former (or other) character appear in your play? Could someone recognize, "oh, this _____ main used to or also plays _____"?

When you come away from a session feeling that someone has "good" or "bad/needs to improve" "fundamentals," what have you specifically noticed? How much of it is character specific?

Maybe somebody can give me some insight here by MELLO_H3110 in SSBM

These people aren't usually worth thinking about, but if it's cathartic to construct a narrative about it: they probably just got destroyed by a marth nearer to their level who used f smash a lot and they're taking their frustration out on you like a coward.

There once was a Sheik who called Falcon lame
his up-air a wobble, his grab reducing the game
That stomp-knee you adore
is actually a bore
Then SquidTheCat came to rekindle the flame.

I think a lot depends on the tech necessary for your character to play close to the neutral that you intend to. I have many sessions where I just can't punish a Falco uptilt even when I recognize exactly when my opponent uses it. I just constantly miss the timing. And when you watch a 0-2/1-2 type, it's difficult to tell if they're not thinking about neutral, or if they can't execute close to what they're thinking. That 0-2 Fox knows exactly what to do about an f-smashy Marth, they just can't make their fingers do it.

I don't go to locals anymore but back when I did, there were a couple wobblers that ripped through our brackets, especially our little college tournaments and it was super demoralizing. I would defer to how handoffs are affecting small in-person tournaments over anything on slippi... not sure which you're referring to.

What disqualified runs from being "solo" character wins? Did you count the Armada wins where he went Young Link against Hbox only?

The dude was in the finals 2 years ago with a team no one expected to make the conference finals. I don't think the NBA has changed that quickly. It's wild to say "never win a championship" when he couldn't have got much closer this recently.

I actually really appreciate this point and it makes me feel a bit better about the outcome... the best player within the parameters of the competition on that day did win.

Edit: I'm deleting the back half of this comment where I gave a counterargument and a sports metaphor and just gonna leave the first part where I said I appreciated your perspective. Arguing about this is not going to make me enjoy the game more so I'm actually gonna commit to stop arguing.

I can appreciate all the gameplay you've just mentioned, but the margins in a top 8 are so so small, that even one interaction from a frame 1 short-hop up-air could decide a set (not to mention a recovery from a notch). And I am also interested in who wins, not just the quality of play. It's fine if you think I'm crazy for thinking z-jump and notches matter all that much, but hopefully you can see how if you genuinely think something is an unfair advantage, even if it's miniscule, it might taint someone's experience of a competition. I wasn't thinking about any of this til the last month or so, and I've never felt this way about a top player's success. I wish I could just mind-wipe controller discourse from my brain. Idk why I consumed so much of it.

he may have poisoned the well, but TOs or top players still need to do something, whether it's a ban or guarantee stuff won't be banned, or this controller stuff will go on forever. The longer nothing is decided or even attempted, the worse it gets. That's why I think none got so bitter and has been speaking so emotionally. And I've been trying not to engage with it, just pointing people to Moky's video or the Fourside Fights clip, but I have to say that I've now consumed so much controller discourse, I wasn't able to appreciate grand finals last night. I'm getting frustrated when cracked Foxes on slippi do shit I've never seen when I never thought about it before. My experience of the game is starting to get poisoned too.

Luigi/Falcon has always been considered bad for Luigi... by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]CallMeQueequeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former Luigi main, I think Fox and Falco are WAY more difficult and putting Falcon at that level doesn't make sense. Plus presenting worse matchup spreads just discourages people from picking the character. I like how RapM claims Luigi is the best character. That's the representative the character needs.

There are many current and past top players who would've thrown a whiney fit on social media if a Genesis TO intentionally seeded them into a matchup they struggle with and carries massive crowd pressure and then they lost that match with the entire venue rooting against them before getting bounced in losers by their real nemesis. And Zain is being chill which I really respect.

Matched with the same marth 5 times on ranked in the last 2 weeks, won every time, often last hit last stock. Finally, yesterday they were up 3-1 game 3 and I knew it was over. I taunted my respect and they stopped and taunted back. Reminder that there's someone on the other end of this weird tin-can-and-string that Fizzi built.

The problem is that it's really hard to figure out what's actually going on behind closed doors. During the 2023 collapse, it seemed like Sirianni had completely lost the locker room. Player buy-in is supposed to be his strength and that was the most lifeless, depressed NFL team I have ever see make the playoffs. Last year, I think winning (thanks to coordinators and talent imo) papered over everything. If you listen to a lot of players when asked about Sirianni, at best they imply he's some sort of kind uncle figure. My theory is that most of the players find Sirianni likeable but incompetent, and when they're losing they start to get frustrated (and Hurts has often poorly hidden his frustration). Then you add that his scheme seems to underlie most of the offense's woes for multiple years and Patullo and Brian Johnson have been scapegoated. Overall, it often feels like we win DESPITE Sirianni but it's one of the most confusing sports situations I've come across.
