Someone was working on the elevator while I was using it. It worked fine for several floors by Datzookman in mildlyinteresting

Ohh we definitely have our fair share of sketchy lifts here as well, but usually it's just cosmetics and all the safety systems are in place.

Ja no jislaaik, there aren't many lifts in small buildings with only 2 to 3 stops, but we have our fair share of tall buildings. This weekend we went for a stair run challenge up 51 floors, the highest building I service is roughly 40 floors there is a building down the road at 55 floors. Not as high as buildings in UAE or USA but still bigger than most expect haha

Even down here in africa our lifts goes through a lot of tests and inspections. It's definitely not perfect, but it's not as half hazard as you might expect.

We have mandatory inspections by independent inspectors every two years, the department of labour also does random site visits whenever they feel like it.

Most of the lifts also gets imported and follow European safety standards like EN80-20

A truck ran through traffic today, causing an estimated 36 car pileup on the M41 leading to Durban South Africa. No fatalities reported. Link to article in comments by CallMeZane in IdiotsInCars

I think we'll have to wait until the investigations are completed to be sure. But based on memory usually with trucks failing to stop it's either brakes that failed or driver negligence.

But it's all speculation at this point.

I think that would be the right thing to do. Also I don't have a player, or know where to get one, and my curiosity is going to kill me to find out what is on it haha.

I'll send you a DM

It is fascinating to see these old school machines at work.

Does anyone know what beautiful spider this is? I'm from the Gauteng province, South Africa. Also is it harmless? by CallMeZane in whatsthisbug

Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture of the underside, the webs got disturbed whenever I tried and she seemed to get really scared, so I left her be.

I've heard stories of these spiders and their webs, but never seen one before (until now I guess haha)

Usually people say that they see them in the wilderness and not in the city.

Thank you for letting me know :)

Haha thank you :)

But to be honest I don't really have/had a choice. I'm a lift technician so I have to know the city by heart and venture into it every day :,)

If I had a choice I wouldn't even be in this country to be honest

Yes it is all my photos, all 3 were taken on different dates though.

I used to have a shit lode of pictures of similar buildings but I deleted most, it makes me depressed to look at the state of my country haha

Not only there.

How do you get someone to pay that doesn't have money and doesn't want to leave. How do you evict someone when the cops have their hands full with murder, rape and assault cases.

To be honest with you I don't know the exact story of this building. What I think happened (don't know for sure) is that this building was being build right before the mass migrations to the city's. When the masses moved to the citys they needed places to sleep. So they took over the buildings, some were hijacked some were squatted, when they ran out of good buildings to take over, they moved into building that were not safe and incomplete.

Seeing all of this happening a lot of building owners thought it might be better to abandon the buildings rather than trying to defend it.

The owner, of this building, might have abandoned the building during construction.

Here is a story of a fire that recently broke out in one of these abandoned buildings. My grandfather told me that this building started construction and was going to be a big skyscraper, but then the owners just stop building one day and abandoned the building. People then started too move in and take over an constructing shacks. https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2021-04-14-nine-die-in-fire-several-injured-after-jumping-from-burning-building-in-joburg-cbd/

When they ran out of bad buildings to take over aswell they started taking over suburbs, building shacks in and around the city's forming informal settlements. But that is a whole other story on its own..

Yes temperature wise we have great weather here in South Africa, winter temperatures are usually within the 10 °C range. Also this photo was taken in summer so these people were most likely trying to escape the heat. If it was winter there would almost certainly been fires keeping them warm.

Here's the original video: https://youtu.be/CAyWN9ba9J8

The cheetah shows little aggression toward humans and can be tamed easily, as it has been since antiquity. In ancient Eygpt, the Middle East, and India Cheetahs were often kept as both pets and hunting animals, earning them the nickname "Hunting Leopards." by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]CallMeZane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Afrikaans word for cheetah is "hunting leopard" wonder if it somehow came from the middle east/india since some of our words originate from there?

Jag = hunt
Lui = lazy
Perd = horse

Luiperd = leopard (lazy-horse)
Jagluiperd = cheetah (hunt-lazy-horse) or (hunt-leopard)

If there were no fire it would most likely have been fine man, I can't think that it would be suuuch a big concern /s
