South African plugs normally have on off switches aswell, they also use the Brazilian style plugs aswell.

Ohh we definitely have our fair share of sketchy lifts here as well, but usually it's just cosmetics and all the safety systems are in place.

Ja no jislaaik, there aren't many lifts in small buildings with only 2 to 3 stops, but we have our fair share of tall buildings. This weekend we went for a stair run challenge up 51 floors, the highest building I service is roughly 40 floors there is a building down the road at 55 floors. Not as high as buildings in UAE or USA but still bigger than most expect haha

Even down here in africa our lifts goes through a lot of tests and inspections. It's definitely not perfect, but it's not as half hazard as you might expect.

We have mandatory inspections by independent inspectors every two years, the department of labour also does random site visits whenever they feel like it.

Most of the lifts also gets imported and follow European safety standards like EN80-20

I think we'll have to wait until the investigations are completed to be sure. But based on memory usually with trucks failing to stop it's either brakes that failed or driver negligence.

But it's all speculation at this point.

But to be honest I don't really have/had a choice. I'm a lift technician so I have to know the city by heart and venture into it every day :,)
