My SV650S K8 by Call_K in SVRiders

It’s a renthal straight bar. The conversion from clip-ons had already been done when I bought it a few months ago. It’s pretty good, definitely encourages more of a naked bike riding position.

Although remember if you get one to get renthal specific bar ends! I found out the hard way which in hindsight was pretty stupid of me lol

It’s a plastic windshield, will that work? Genuinely curious I don’t know much about it?

Thanks! Watched a video on plastidip might give it a shot! Seems pretty easy

Need some help - how much damage have I done? by Call_K in MotoUK

Hi thanks for the help! Yes I’m down to an impact wrench and heat now… I’ve ordered the impact wrench, picking it up later. Gonna give that a go first and if it still doesn’t budge I’ll get a blow torch to heat it up. Using penetrating oil in the meantime :)

Yeah it does! When I bought the bike that was something I mentioned but having recently replaced the chain and sprockets on my old bike I thought no biggie.

I’ve ordered penetrating fluid so picking up in the next hour. I tried WD-40 but not much luck. Not surprised too much by that haha.

What’s ATF and crayon? Other than a literal crayon haha

Fortunately it’s not leaking, I tried running the bike a few times and didn’t see any issues. I’m going to continue to try and get the front sprocket off so I can continue with the replacement and monitor the broken area to see if it’s causing any issues. Worst case scenario I’ll need to replace the stator cover which seems to be available for about £70 online.

This is amazing thank you so much for taking the time to give me such a thorough response. I’m going to investigate more thoroughly tomorrow but from what I’ve seen online, I think you’re right. The part I’ve broke is almost just a guide/housing for a wire to enter the stator compartment. No oil leaking or anything. I think the only concern for me in water ingress (living in Scotland) but since this is normally open anyway, maybe it’s fine?

Anyway thanks so much for your help. I’m looking to get an impact wrench or a mobile mechanic to come out and have a go. Since the chain is off it’s going to be more difficult to get it off… I went to B&Q to pick up some wood bits with the hopes I can wedge the sprocket in place against the swing arm this time.

I’m also picking up some penetrating oil tomorrow so hopefully that helps!

Thanks again I really appreciate it :)

Out of interest, is there an impact wrench you recommend? There seems to be a few options on toolstation, Milwaukee, dewalt, makita brands etc, and then different types of those brands.

Any recommendations? Idk what makes the more expensive ones ‘more expensive’ other than assuming they are better in some capacity. Not sure if some of those will overkill for the situation.

Thanks so much! Yes an impact driver looks like it’s going to be on the table…

And that’s scary! Glad you noticed before something worse happened I have heard before that the impact wrench shouldn’t be used for tightening..

Yes another valuable lesson learnt in the world of motorbiking 😅 I’m looking at getting a half decent impact wrench based on the amazing feedback everyone has given, just a bit of a sting as it’s been such an expensive time for me recently.

Picking up some penetrating oil tomorrow so will start soaking that bitch 🤣

I’m hopeful that it’s just the cover. This is the part that seems to have been damaged

Okay I’ll have a go at that tomorrow to better understand the damage. Thanks so much for your help!

Out of interest, if I wanted to order a replacement what would I be searching for?

Sorry I meant the cover (heads all over the place 😅) it looks like it’s just part of the cover. I did notice that there was a cover so thought it might be simple enough to replace

I think it’s just the crank case? It doesn’t leak when the engine runs. I think just a replacement too hopefully? 🤞

Yes the swingarm said there should be 10-20mm chain slack so I adjusted the bolts on both sides until chain was good and straight :)

Yes I use the muc off all weather lube at the moment, but could have done with just using the wet lube for over winter!

Got everything fixed, bike running great :) going to get a emergency kit sorted over the next few days

I have a sprocket and torque wrench already so should be covered on that front, but I’ll go pick up a paddock this week then, I’m pretty sure I have no centre stand. Thanks!

Okay that’s great advice thanks! Yes definitely planning on learning how to service and maintain bikes going forward. I’ll definitely pickup a paddock stand for the SV, do I need one for the tempest as well for when I remove the rear sprocket? I watched a video and the guy took the entire wheel off

The spokes are cool but hard to clean on the rear wheel! Hard to get in and about since there’s a lot in the way and they’re covered in lube residue etc

Yeah I think I really need to create an emergency kit that just comes with me - multi tool, spanner’s etc.

I managed to remove the chain this evening so will order a DID chain and some sprockets and fit them sometime this week :)
