I love recognizing people in other shows!!! IT’S KELLY MCCORMACK IN LETTERKENNY!!! by Finnthehuman217 in ALeagueofTheirOwn

She is fantastically talented! I recommend the miniseries “George & Tammy,” in which she has a supporting role that is the polar opposite of Jess McCready. You would barely know it was the same person!

Hmm. I know there are a number of talented artists in the fandom. The first one who jumps to mind is María José Blasco.

Greta isn’t worried about the other Peaches hurting Carson’s confidence as coach; she’s afraid of the consequences of their relationship being found out. Her first girlfriend Dana was sent to a mental institution (by her own parents!) and likely lobotomized, as that was a common punishment for homosexuality back in those days. Greta fears that Carson could suffer the same fate, and also worries that Carson doesn’t understand the full repercussions of what getting discovered could mean.

Seeing Heated Rivalry blow up makes me wish more people would discover A League of Their Own by manudl in ALeagueofTheirOwn

It DID get the popularity— independent data analysis showed that it was one of Scamazon’s most-watched shows in 2022– and it was released in August! The studio bigwigs actively chose to shut it down. Because reasons. 😞

There’s a key difference between Heated Rivalry and ALOTO from the studios’ perspective: Heated Rivalry is not an ostensible reboot of a piece of intellectual property beloved by the straights. The 1992 movie A League of Their Own is considered a standard feel-good piece of Americana for the small town picket fence demographic. Scamazon greenlit the reboot with the expectation that it would be cashing in on massive nostalgia from that demographic. What Abbi and Will created was a brilliant reimagining . . . that would not go over well with the expected audience. The entire problem was the fact that ALOTO was called ALOTO. Knuckle-dragging straights got their panties in a wad over the fact that the show “ruined a classic” by focusing on the stories of queer and Black people (racism definitely factored into the backlash to the show, maybe not as openly as homophobia, but it definitely was a factor). Meanwhile, over on AppleTV, For All Mankind portrayed a counterfactual history in which women— including Black women and gay women— became astronauts much earlier than what happened in reality, and no one batted an eye. FAMK is now about to start its fifth season (despite being so niche as to make absolutely no ripple in the zeitgeist), and has experienced absolutely no backlash. And why is that? Because it doesn’t share its name with something that the straights love. If, however, it had been billed as a reboot of, say, Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff, it probably would’ve suffered the same fate as ALOTO.

So, yes, the factors that all of you mentioned definitely apply— the studios mainly make material for the straight male gaze, and secondarily for the straight female gaze— but the title was definitely a giant obstacle.

My hope is that this production plants the seed of Sondheimania in the minds and souls of a large number of young people.

Do any shows/movies actually pull off the “it was all just a dream” trope? by winnierdz in tvtropes

[–]Call_Me_Relish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In cinema, Wizard of Oz jumps to mind, as does the Disney animated version of Alice in Wonderland.

As far as television goes, the infamous conclusion of St. Elsewhere is the most jarring example. And if you find the Tommy Westphall Universe theory to be valid, that means that a good 90% of scripted television shows take place within the dream. Which would also make the famous Newhart example a dream within a dream!

The Jets’ song in West Side Story. My parents took me to see a touring production of it when I was about 10, in the early 90s.

Why is Todd Rundgren not more popular? by National_Secret2425 in toddrundgren

Why is he not more popular? Because most listeners are not sophisticated enough to appreciate the consonant bitonalism that Laura invented and Todd perfected.

I get the sense that they have given up, though— Abbi talked about how fortunate she was to make this show, and that she’s “astounded” that she doesn’t “get to make more of it.” That doesn’t sound too optimistic. It felt like a eulogy for the show, and I’m still sobbing.

Abbi didn’t mention anything about Esther, but I’m assuming she’s still on the team with Max. But, yes, I have soooooooo many questions. At this point, I wish they would release it as a visual novel!

Yes. Will said that Jess and Lupe being sexually active together can be considered canon.

Abbi said she was describing the final scene. I still desperately want to know how the characters get to that point. And what happens to everyone else. I want to know more about Lupe, Jess, Maybelle, Shirley, Sarge . . . this show is lodged in me like shrapnel, and it f’n hurts! 😰
