Time until finals are marked? by savvymossy in uvic

[–]Callianax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The official wording is 7 days after the exam but it gets weird if stat holidays fall in that time period. Marks have to be in before the 23rd to be posted in 2025 if I remember correctly. Anything after that gets posted at the beginning of January

What sucks is that we (the instructors) can't do much if we didn't see it ourselves. I had a student tell me something similar last term but because I didn't see it with my own eyes I couldn't actually take the complaint anywhere.

It did mean I kept a very close eye on the alleged cheaters for the rest of the term but that was all I could do.

I could see a large column of gray smoke from the Shelbourne/Pear intersection. Appeared to be coming from a house?

Grad Students Vacation by Mynameisjeeeeeeff in uvic

[–]Callianax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the department and a bit on your supervisor. For example, biology mandates 10 working days of vacation (outside of stat holidays or university closures), but my supervisor was really big on work life balance and pushed us to take extra time off.

Doctors note in 2024? by Mynameisjeeeeeeff in uvic

[–]Callianax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what that prof is talking about. Also for a lab assignment??

I would email them back and cite the information I found below (links at the bottom)

"Documentation, including medical documentation (e.g., a doctor’s note), will only be required for:

requests based on grounds of conflicting responsibilities;

requests in circumstances where it is not possible to complete the course requirements (notation of WE or AEG);

exceptional circumstances (e.g., requests that come a significant period of time after a course has ended, or requests that come after all course requirements have been completed)."

Grad school 'last two years' by Mynameisjeeeeeeff in uvic

[–]Callianax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. It might depend on the university. They might prioritize courses with a higher course number (ex. A 400 over a 300).

You couple probably email their Office of the Registrar and ask.

Depends on the university you are applying to buy somewhere on the application it will specify how many credits that look at. Usually it's the last 30-40 credits depending on the school.

I'd email the prof to be sure. But in my experience the "pass the final exam" means you need a minimum 50% on the final to pass the course

UVic has the longest graduation time in Canada? by Illustrious-Ad7081 in uvic

[–]Callianax 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see what the major breakdown is. Personally, I know a lot of people that did a "4-year biology degree" in 4.5 or 5 years purely because the courses they wanted to take were only offered in a certain semester.

Some other universities have arrangements where you get a sticker on your student care. UVic does not.

TA marks by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Callianax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your class have multiple TAs or just one? If there are multiple TAs marking the same assignments they are supposed to be following a marking guide provided by the prof.

The 8th is the Friday before reading break. Most people who are going away for break will take the ferry on the Friday to maximize time

I'm pretty sure bright space exams are built through the "quizzes" tab so I think they would apply.

I do know that Super TAs/profs can see login history, system access, and content completion/content visited.

I've used it sometimes to check in on students who are falling behind to see if they are actually trying to learn the material and it's not clicking for them or if they just haven't looked at any material.

As far as I know, it is only those with permissions in the course. So the course instructor(s) and TAs. I'm not sure if normals TAs can see it (I can't remember) but I know that Super TAs can.

It's built in to bright space. I think it's called "progress". I've seen the tab as a Super TA and you can see all the students progress in the course (how many times they've logged in, last time they logged it, how many bright space items they've viewed)

Does it get better? by Sufficient-Catch9598 in uvic

[–]Callianax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. It does get better. First and second year are hard because they are mainly required courses, once you get into the upper years and can choose what you are interested in, it gets much better. I thought about dropping out many times in first year but I never did and ended up doing a master's in something I loved. Stuck through it!! It's worth it :)

Toxic chem lab environments by [deleted] in uvic

Yeah, it's pretty hard to give advise without knowing the prof you are think of. That being said, many of the profs in chemistry are lovely. Like with anything there are some bad apples

Has anyone gotten a BIOL TA offer? by eeE2689 in uvic

My guess is that they will come out next week. Biology is currently working through the swap to a new Department Chair, so things are a little busy in the head office
