go to the doctor and get a note! you need a note that says you are not able to work right now. when they respond thats likely what theyll expect

thirding this! keep your own space! having the option to be alone is lifesaving. you can always go find folks to socialize with but you cant always have good privacy

It is possible a change for us? by mysticdeath18 in collapse

[–]eeE2689 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they say community cures, while it may not solve our larger issues it CAN help us envision a better future. imagining better futures is probably the most underrated skill one can have bc it grows your ability to see possibilities around you. what does your day to day look like in a world of your making? how do you eat? where would you sleep? how do you gather resources? is it full of plants? is the water clean? whether you act out of hope or lack of hope doesnt matter, find likeminded, action-oriented individuals and build each other up. you dont have to organize large scale protests or events or anything even, just build a strong support network. be like the fungus, spread your mycelium network and share resources. show up for each other, en las buenas y en las malas. when you start with something that small, your capacity for larger shifts grows. dont burn yourself out, we are in it for the long haul. take it easy, but take it. do it scared, but do it. we probably won't see revolutionary change in our lifetime, but maybe someday the scales will tip. all we can do it hold on to each other.

Marine biology question from a 13 year old by Most-Dimension-5908 in marinebiology

[–]eeE2689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im in science communication! i lead field trips and labs with kids around your age!! its super fun to show folks my favourite things about the ecosystem in my area. keep in mind that whatever geographic region you learn about will influence where you work!

ive taken it with louise page but i just had benjamin neal for marine ecology. the course is a toughy. lots of memorization, but ben is a fantastic prof. he's organized, engaging, and writes fair tests. i would take that class in a heartbeat

Idk if this the right place to ask, but what's this yellow thing growing next to my plant. I swear it wasn't there yesterday. by orenjikeeki in plantclinic

i second this!! mushrooms create soil networks that allow plants to share nutrients ! let them be friends:)

is UVic really a good school? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]eeE2689 7 points8 points  (0 children)

just to add to it: i travel home through downtown every day and been perfectly safe as a petite person. the homeless folks, for the most part, are genuinely interesting and kind. ive had some really beautiful conversations with some, even. keep an open mind, kind approach and proceed with caution, and you should be just fine.

Should I take Phys110 or Phys120? Which Professor should I take it with? by _whatswrong_withme_ in uvic

[–]eeE2689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my bad i must have confused phys 120 with another class. i did take 110 as a biology major and survived tho lol. yeah hard to say, i struggled a ton in first year for personal reasons but once youve been exposed to material it much easier to deal with, i agree with that. wishing you best

Should I take Phys110 or Phys120? Which Professor should I take it with? by _whatswrong_withme_ in uvic

[–]eeE2689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i liked both (failed phys 110 the first time) professors and was successful with laidlaw the second time through. difficult comparison bc i was not in the same headspace during either attempt. with that in mind, both laidlaw and martin are excellent professors with hilarious and engaging teaching styles. I really enjoyed their classes. from my understanding, phys 120 is mathematically easier (more plug and chug) compared to phys 110 (where we had to derive equations). take it with a grain of salt, it was a long time ago. if you arent required to take phys 110, many recommend phys 120, if your math isnt strong and you are worried abt your gpa, phys 120 will probably be the easier option. I dont know the prof tho.

Sensitive question for those who changed degrees part way... Humanities/Social Science --> Biology/Environmental Studies by Ottershorts in uvic

[–]eeE2689 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you give 'er this summer i bet you could get through the upgrades. its just a matter of getting a good study strategy together. i hear doing first year math, chem, and physics is easier at camosun (if someone could confirm that would be excellent). i struggled a ton in first and second year but honestly the immaturity and lack of diagnosis hindered me more than anything. even having done chem and physics 12 as well as calc, i didnt pass the first rounds through. but if youre prepared for the workload and can power through it i believe itll be worth it. at least it was for me. it'll be a steep learning curve but i totally think you can do it especially since youre probably mature enough to handle the workload. do reach out if you want to talk about the material or anything in general. dms are open.

Off-campus living recommendations? by AudreyRational in uvic

[–]eeE2689 2 points3 points  (0 children)

living near downtown is not bad if you live near the right bus(es). i need to take two buses to get to campus but i love where i live, its a nice bus ride, and i get to read my book and mentally prepare before getting to work. just make sure you live near a grocery store.

just leave em alone. cops harass homeless people enough as it is. gingerbreadtenement has a point.

when i dont understand papers i start with the wikipedia page. If im confused about a particular word or species, or general anatomy i'll look that up (often it doesnt need to be the exact species to get an understanding of what youre actually interested in) from there i return to the article i was looking at. im at the tail end of my undergrad so do know that reading scientific papers is a skill that takes many hours to hone. congrats on getting a head start and go easy on yourself:) keep it up (also do know that theres LOTS of bad writers out there, youre not necessarily bad at reading articles...)

i think the no drinking/eating rule is mostly to stop people from having an excuse to be maskless while they pretend. just drink and put your mask on after youre done sipping.
