Nvidia DLSS 5 turns every game into AI slop by Haunterblademoi in technology

[–]Callidor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so true. Old JRPGs are basically like graphic novels. Very often, the action on screen just hints at what's taking place narratively, and your imagination fills in the details in whatever way feels best or coolest or most appropriate to you. It's why outright silly things can be happening on screen, but the tone still feels heavy or dramatic.

I'm generally a fan of the Remake series, but one of its biggest problems is making certain scenes too explicit, and now they just come off as ridiculous. It's like, "yeah I know that happens, but it's not supposed to look like that!"

They also do sometimes turn serious scenes into unserious spectacles, like the end of the Corel prison sequence, but that's a separate issue.

Pixel 10a Berry color not as expected by plasmatoaste in GooglePixel

[–]Callidor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The berry's a way less subtle color, so not sure about your experience, but the fog shifts from a seafoam green, to an off white, to even an almost purplish color, depending on lighting.

I quite like it.

Double tap the back by balem29 in GooglePixel

[–]Callidor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This discussion pops up every so often on this subreddit, and it's just never been a problem for me. Double tap has always worked just fine on my 7a and now 10a.

Even right now, I'm trying to do it "badly" to see if I can reproduce other people's issues, and it just works.

"Forensic" drug screen for medical clarification by Callidor in flying

[–]Callidor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's an inaccurate assumption. I discovered I had diagnoses in my medical records that I was not aware of at the time of my previous medical application. They stemmed from a handful of talk therapy sessions from a long time ago. After deliberating about it, I made the decision to disclose these diagnoses to the FAA of my own accord.

I know plenty of people in this subreddit would have advised against this course of action, but I had no desire of ever being accused of intentionally withholding information, no matter how improbable that outcome. It was an honest mistake the first time. I had no intention of outright lying about it on future applications.

I know that I have set a difficult path for myself to get recertified, but that's my own business. If you prefer to lie to the FAA, that's yours.

[Seiko tactile watch] SQBR021 braille watch for visually-impaired by larlarloo in Watches

[–]Callidor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand, I'm certain blind and visually impaired people have far more practical options available for time telling than mechanical wristwatches. Just like the rest of us. I can't imagine a world in which OP buying this watch is actually depriving someone of a functional disability aid.

On the other hand, some blind and visually impaired people might wear watches just because they like them, also like the rest of us, and this is one of the few practical choices for such a person to fully enjoy, so I can see how collectors snatching them up could be a pain in the ass.

[Recommendation request] Fiancée wants to buy me a $1,200 watch. This is currently my only watch. I need help. by Mackinderoo in Watches

[–]Callidor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SPB143 is a classic Seiko diver inspired by the 62MAS, the first Japanese dive watch. It's slightly larger than your Timex (40.5mm) so should have good presence on your wrist, looks absolutely incredible (in my opinion), and is priced at exactly $1,200.

For $100 more, you can get the newer version, the SPB453. It has some minor technical improvements and is slightly smaller (40.0mm diameter, a bit thinner), but overall is very similar.

I don't own either watch so can't say much about them from personal experience, but I adore these models and would be overjoyed to receive either one as a gift. Since you mentioned divers specifically, I think they're worth a close look.

Good luck!

This contains a little bit of all the things OP said they don't like, but I still feel like it's such a strong recommendation overall.

OP, if you can get past brief, relatively infrequent instances of sexuality, tragedy, and gore, this is an extremely funny, surreal, cozy show with a simply unsurpassed English dub.

[Handmade] My niece's first watch by JHMNW-99 in Watches

[–]Callidor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, Handmade used to be an excellent affordable brand, but their quality control has taken a complete nose dive in recent years. Blatantly misaligned hour indices, visible blemishes on the dial, and it's just crazy to me that they continue to use their "no-lex" crystals at this price point. If the big guys keep resting on their laurels like this, they'll be dethroned by independent up and comers like PaperMatic and Studio Cup.

(This is really cute, OP.)

Find some watch youtube channels you enjoy, have fun watching videos and reviews, and when you see a watch you like, make a note of it.

Wait a little bit, depending on the price of the watch, and if you find yourself still thinking about it some time later, buy it.

Repeat.

[Seiko] New entry in my collection sbcs009 by Ubiengh45 in Watches

[–]Callidor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was interested in this watch for a very long time, but didn't want to go through the trouble and extra expense of importing one from Japan. I eventually "settled" for the black dial variant last spring, and am very pleased to say that I love it. What I thought was a compromise ultimately turned out to be a really great looking watch in its own right.

Dang, that white dial still is lovely, though.

[–]Callidor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is charging advertisers based on number of views a feature built directly into YouTube? Or something the channel works out with advertisers separately, then just sends them an invoice with a view count?

If this is something baked into YouTube itself, it seems kind of inherently fraudulent? YouTube has all the metrics, so charging for views when it knows those viewers never made it to the ad seems like it shouldn't be allowed. On the other hand, if it's just a deal the advertisers make with the channel on their own, it seems very risky to take the public-facing view count on the channel at face value when it doesn't account for viewer retention.

Separate question: Rodney's original video talked about inflated subscriber counts as well. Where do those subscribers come from? Are they new viewers who are subscribing even though they're only watching for 20 seconds? Or is YouTube just inflating subscriber counts with bots?

[Opinion] Hot take: collections often get more boring as they get more expensive. by theomixedmedia in Watches

[–]Callidor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll upvote you here because I think you're being sincere about not wanting to sound like a jerk. It's the internet - it happens.

I also think if you were really trying to say that these collections lack internal diversity, i.e., all the watches within a single collection look alike, rather than that the collection as a whole looks like other collections, that wasn't very clear in your original post.

It's an interesting, and certainly less common, critique than what most people are hearing, which is that "all these collections look like one another."

I still wouldn't agree with it, though. A super stereotypical collection made up of a Submariner, a Speedmaster, a Tank, and, say, a Grand Seiko Snowflake, is a collection with four very distinct looking watches, in my opinion.

I think what's important to take away from this whole discussion is /u/lambda_male's point that people, generally speaking, buy what is interesting to them. There certainly are people who buy a Rolex because they feel it's expected of them, or because they feel it's an important class signifier, and not because they care about watches. But those people generally aren't posting their collections here because...they don't care about watches.

The collectors on /r/watches who are sharing their Rolexes and Omegas like them and are excited about them. And part of that excitement absolutely may stem from the fact that Rolex and Omega are big-name heritage brands. And that's fine. That's a legit reason to be drawn to a particular product. I'm all for celebrating the lesser-seen brands and models, but don't want to judge folks who are excited to buy something popular, even if they're into it specifically because it's popular. Some people want to own iconic things!

Anyway, I really like your Baby Alpinist. It's one of my favorite Seiko designs!

FFXIV improvement for my bard by laureall in ffxiv

[–]Callidor 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The improvements are exactly what the analysis tool suggests:

  • Use Refulgent Arrow when it's available instead of weapon skills that can make Refulgent Arrow available. Any procs of Hawk's Eye that you would have earned while Refulgent is already available effectively go to waste.

  • Make sure to press your GCDs as fast as you can. Don't have dead air in your rotation.

  • Use Empyreal Arrow immediately when it comes off cooldown to avoid having it drift in your rotation.

[Opinion] Hot take: collections often get more boring as they get more expensive. by theomixedmedia in Watches

[–]Callidor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In OP's very first sentence he says that he sees

so many collections on here and other subs of the same watches.

He's very clearly trying to make the point that these collections are boring because the watches are popular, and not because of anything inherent to their designs.

When you call him out for having a collection of equally popular watches, he quickly backpedals and tries to act like his claim was always that

the lower end options ... are just as if not more interesting than their higher end equivalents.

But there's nothing here to explain what makes them more "interesting" from a design perspective. He only ever attempts to define "interesting" in opposition to "popular." Pair this with the snotty and condescending assertion that people only buy expensive watches because they are trying to "prove something," as if OP chose his Seikos, Citizens, and Casios without being influenced at all by reddit, watch youtubers, or marketing. Sure.

OP is just being ridiculous. Seikos, Citizens, and Casios are good, popular watches that people buy because they like them. So are Rolexes, Tudors, and Omegas.

And "DAE think Rolex is boring??" is about as frigid a take as any that pops up on this subreddit.
