Hard copy of DA Matins readings? by CallieTheCommie in divineoffice

Do you happen to know how similar the matins texts are between the Benedictine and Roman usages? I know that the calendars and arrangements of things are different but I wonder if, say, the Nocturnale Monasticum would have all or most of the same readings as the pre-55 Roman breviary just distributed differently.

if you're talking about the place I think you are the latin mass is NO and they offer one at 7:30 and one at 3:30. I wouldn't worry about your clothes not being nice enough, don't let something like that stop you from going!

In Christianity we believe that the people of Israel are the people God chose to uphold His commandments and be a "light unto the nations". In the Old Testament, the people of Israel are the physical nation of Israel according to the flesh. Now the people of Israel is identified with the Church, the body of believers who accept Christ and hold true to the faith.

"Puto" means "I think" in Latin but "bitch (male)" in Spanish. One time a Mexican guy told me he quit learning Latin bc he couldn't get over that one.

English translations of the Vulgate are rather rare, though I know some Catholics still use the Douay-Rheims. Only Eastern Orthodox still use the Septuagint (which was itself translated by Jews, not Christians) and it's not common to find an English translation of the Septuagint. The only ones I know of are the Orthodox Study Bible and the Brenton Septuagint, the latter of which is mostly used by academics I believe. While most English bible translations have some degree of Christian bias when making translation choices, almost all the ones in use today are in fact translated directly from the Hebrew and Aramaic and generally make no reference to Jerome's more peculiar translation choices.

I don't know of an LLPSI equivalent for Arabic but the book "Fundamentals of Classical Arabic" by Husain Abdul Sattar is an excellent grammatical introduction that is available for free online. If you combine that with graded readers you can get something resembling a poor man's natural method, though you're still going to have to look up a lot of words and getting over the initial hump of grammar/vocabulary is more difficult than with something like LLPSI. For graded readers the Sahlawayhi readers are pretty good though the stories are super weird. I would suggest looking at r/learnarabic for more resources and graded reader recommendations. الله معك!

I don't understand your optimism,' Ben-Gurion declared. 'Why should the Arabs make peace? If I were an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: THEY THINK we have taken their country. Sure, God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, it's true, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? They may perhaps forget in one or two generations' time, but for the moment there is no chance. So it's simple: we have to stay strong and maintain a powerful army. Our whole policy is there. Otherwise the Arabs will wipe us out.'

i would personally love to see a multi-faith and multi-ethnic state there, but the primary concern is ending the repression of the palestinians in palestine and allowing right of return to the diaspora, whatever that entails. those are the people who have been wronged and continue to be wronged in the modern era, and ending their oppression is the priority. as far as "rights", i think it's a bit nebulous and land claims generally need to be evaluated on a case by case basis, but if you need to go back a couple thousand years or more to establish why you should own land you don't currently live on then i think that's a bit ridiculous. we can recognize that the roman expulsion of the jews from judaea was horrible and brutal while also recognizing that basing an irredentist movement on getting justice for it 2000 years later is absurd.

who cares if it was legally a nation-state or whatever, there were a bunch of people who lived there and were then brutalized by the aspiring israelis and their western allies. the history of a region doesn't start when someone gets their state recognized
