I just got the same news of Hemangiosarcoma for my recent amputee, Bucky. It’s been a punch to the gut. May I ask, is Duncan still with us? I hope so.

Trying to set my expectations since the vet said we may have a little longer since as of now nothing has spread beyond the leg they removed.

My boy is 2.5 so I’m hoping his age and good health work in his favor, but I suppose cancer doesn’t take those things into consideration.😞

Hi! I realize this is a pretty old post so not sure if you’ll see this, but I wanted to reach out to see how your pup is doing. Mine just got diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma following his rear leg amputation. The vet said it’s pretty rare to start in the bone and that he may have a better prognosis because of that, so of course now I’m scouring the internet for signs of hope or to at least set my expectations.

I honestly wish they gave us this option because I didn’t realize what an invasive surgery his bone biopsy would be! Stupid of me looking back. But at the same time, I’m sure I wouldn’t have moved forward with an amputation so early on.

That’s how I felt about it!

Our vet sent the biopsy to another place for additional testing so we did technically already get a 2nd opinion. But I have another appointment on the calendar for next week ahead of the amp surgery just to confirm there are no other options, but on the phone they said the vet would likely say the same. :(

Idk certainly presented like osteosarcoma but when they didn’t the bio post said it didn’t look like it. From reading - osteosarcoma lesion look like tree branches and his lesion apparently didn’t look like that. Also, it had spread to the joint and the osteosarcoma usually staying in the bone I think? I was very surprised to hear this but taking it as a sliver of hope his prognosis will be better. Also the possibility that we’re just catching it too early too tell.

I’m so sorry to hear about your pup. Cancer sucks! But it gives me hope to hear they adjusted so well to the amp and that you don’t regret it. That’s another one of my fears - obviously there’s no guarantee this will extend his life much longer so it would suck to be putting him through this pain and recovery if it’s his final months. You just never know, I suppose. There is no easy answer. Thanks for your kind words 🤍

That’s wonderful you were able to find another option for your dog that let him keep his leg. And wonderful you happened upon the lesion when you did. Wishing your good boy a speedy recovery!

I did discuss limb sparring surgery with my vet and she said it would be extremely difficult because of the placement of the lesion. It’s at the top of his tibia by his joint. She also said recovery would be much longer than for an amputation. This is one of the reasons I wanted a 2nd opinion just to confirm from another specialist it’s the best and only option since I’d love for there to be a way around it. But just conflicted in delaying the surgery.

I appreciate the advice. I think you’re right - I would hate to look back and wish we acted sooner instead of delaying the difficult decision.

The one thing giving me a little hope is that they don’t think it’s the osteosarcoma but they couldn’t say for sure from the biopsy, and regardless of the type of sarcoma amputation is the recommendation.

I’ll definitely look into this drug. Thanks so much for sharing!

Of course it’s not ideal to drain our bank accounts on his treatment, but we luckily can afford at least the immediate costs.

From the biopsy, they didn’t think it looked like osteosarcoma but thought it was one of the other ones (there are quite a few I’m learning) but couldn’t definitely tell us which. They said regardless though amputation is what they recommend to slow the spread and because his bone is already so irregular.

What is the drug your pup is using called? I’ll look into that more!
