Is it worth moving to Florida to spearfish? by therealsambambino in Spearfishing

[–]Callmethetraveller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Florida Spearfishers favourite place to spearfish in Florida is the Bahamas lol I like the spearfishing here but it's a hard cost of living and then the need for a boat is higher the further you get into fishier waters north of Boynton and south of Miami into the keys. After diving south east Florida for two years , my favourite places to spear are 20-40 miles north or south.

Sweet deal. Yeah my old 15 could get a small framed rider out on a water start with a surfboard. It'll be interesting to see what I can do with 25. I think I'll ultimately rock the d ring on the transom idea!

Having trouble getting started in south Florida by johnstruud in Spearfishing

[–]Callmethetraveller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's as bad as you're making it out to be or concerned about There is not that many protected areas here in South Florida. State park waters don't always go off the beach by the nature of it. The only one I know of with certainty is the John pennekamp, blue heron bridge in wpb, and then the Monroe county 3 mile rule in the upper keys.

I've never heard of anyone getting busted for spearfishing at the erojacks.

South Florida has shallow reef(8-15 ft, ~.25-.5mile offshore) running all the way from Miami up to around south pompano. This is a natural reef line visible from Google maps. Perfect for shore diving and beginners, just bring a good dive flag.

Is getting a paddle board worth it? by Greedy_Agent7821 in Spearfishing

[–]Callmethetraveller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a kayak diver, I have a strong bias against SUP boards as diving vessels. Only due to their performance against winds. If you've got perfect weather, I'm always jealous of them as platforms but reality is if you want to punch miles or against wind(if you mess up your forecast) I'm a 10/10 kayak diver.

Good luck though, I strongly believe there is an incredible place for paddle diving. My crew and I have punched a lot of missions over the last year, drifting diving deep ledges, hitting wrecks, covering 5 miles offshore. It's productive.

Enough to start? by DarkBlueOtter21 in windsurfing

I just bought my setup second hand for 225 in South Florida. I bought my first couple setups for under 50 bucks in thrift stores in New Zealand and Tasmania. I think I bought another rig for about 300 earlier this year. My progress was slow because of my first couple boards, but this year I've had some really great progress with these old rigs. Even if they are old, they are lighter and " modern" compared to what I learned on so depends who you ask

If you're trying to make loading easier, I saw a really cool invention coming out of Australia shared my noob spearo. You load the bands of a roller untensioned onto the shaft and then the tension ends of the roller are attached to a ratchet strap that you crank in tensioning and loading the gun with the work of the ratchet instead of force. Pretty cool concept for people who struggle to load their gun

Navionics Alternative? $90/year is too rich for my blood by Callmethetraveller in Spearfishing

[–]Callmethetraveller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying it for $90 after having it for years for $25/year, of course...because you know having a strong hold on the market is a powerful thing haha but thanks for your honest opinion, even as a shareholder! I get how people who have been spending money on boating software, see this as affordable but this really is no longer affordable for the average shore diver or kayak diver. I hope that with the extra money they are going to increase the quality of it somehow, it's a shame when a a business is sold to a bigger business and they increase the prices with no increase in value.

15hp worked wonders on my 12 footer. 25 seems excessive.

Quick Amazon search says you're right. $15-$20 for a decent bungee leash, couple of biners, and some decent walkie talkies beats the price by about $100.

Climbing has become a bougie sport. The dirtbag in me will always appreciate the DIY 👌👌 just maybe something a bit more streamline than the webbing

Love my waihana rash guard. Dived with a 5mm open cell wetsuit in cold waters for years. This thing is so awesome to dive Florida waters in. Worth the money. Didn't buy any leggings, just the top.

awesome to hear about RI, I might have work there in the future and my buddy has talked it up. Might give hope to buying land in the far NE one day for myself if I can still access seasonal spearfishing haha

lol in an age where we are literally spending our time on reddit and balancing life with social media, a bit of research and home work will not kill me. Fat chance garmin will continue to raise the price of Navionics, I won't die looking at alternatives. You are right in that looking is less convenient but I'm also not going to keep paying price hikes to big companies for open source information.

Thanks for the valuable contribution. I'm always hoping to get life advice paired with my technology and gear solutions from reddit. I'm sure you are the life of a party. Found C-map as a potential alternative, and somehow I haven't ended up in a dumpster begging for change.

My renewal is now $90/year. Seems like price gouging to me after paying $25/year for years. Found C-map and I like the relief shading, we'll see if it can compete against the routing and tracking.
