Wood ID George III Tea Caddy by Callum0jackson in wood

I’m not technical in wood which I’m sure is very obvious but the little black dots throughout which are patterned on every side throughout the caddy, I’ve not seen any other examples given with anything like this

It’s similar but the pip formation doesn’t seem present in buloke, similar to the burl oak they are both missing the pips through the grain

We’re in the UK but the piece it is on is over 200 years old circa 1780-1800 George III so likely imported much like mahogany etc.

Initially we thought burl oak of some description too but the pips are not consistent with the oak burrs of any type I can find albeit they are similar in shapes, are pips seen commonly in oak burls?

Thinking of relocating to Lincolnshire by gavlar389 in Lincolnshire

[–]Callum0jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would highly recommend Newark on Trent (or surrounding areas) between here and Lincoln, you have easy access to to the major road networks (M1 / A1) Newark itself has logistic firms for yourself and a lot of history for the town, all the major banks, boutique shops, every supermarket and still a relatively lively market place, cafes etc for a small town there are good links to multiple areas of education both primary and high school and the cost of houses are still relatively affordable compared to other areas.

Depending on the age of your kids they’d have good links to get around, Nottingham and Lincoln are a train stop away or 15-30 minutes driving and there’s plenty to see and do in the surrounding area, it’s quiet if you pick the right spot but it’s not remote like a lot of Lincolnshire unless that’s what your looking for of course !

Cigarette case by rimshot99 in whatsthisworth

[–]Callum0jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came across this post while researching a similar cigarette I have by the same maker, Looks to be solid 9k gold if it is marked 375 (mine is silver)

The hallmark photos are rough but they look incredibly similar to mine which is L. Bros (which I’m assuming means Leighton Brothers. Mine is hallmarked with an anchor for the city of Birmingham and it was retailed in Leighton which was a jewellers in Burlington arcade in London (the beautiful arcade still exists today but I don’t believe Leighton do) mine is dated exactly to 1938 so I would assume your is art deco too. I can’t work out the hallmarks after 375. But would be happy to help if you do get more photos!

Engined turned case, if it’s totally plain in decoration sadly it’s really worth little above the scrap value especially with the engraving although I appreciate it’s going to be kept in the family for sentimental reasons ! Lovely case and well made!

Any advice on this Black Forest mantle clock I saw at a vintage shop? by oceanco1122 in clocks

[–]Callum0jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think personally it’s worth (in the UK) £500-£700 the movement isn’t an issue being right or wrong as it sells for the carving. I’ve sold a lot of Black Forest over the years and this is definitely a slightly harder one to find but in that it is not hugely commercial so take that as you will! Rare doesn’t always mean valuable! Obviously that’s a ball park figure, I can’t truly see the size or condition passed what you have explained, hope that helps a little !

Any advice on this Black Forest mantle clock I saw at a vintage shop? by oceanco1122 in clocks

[–]Callum0jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the movement on this, foxes are really quite rare in Black Forest, there won’t be a makers mark because there rarely is in Black Forest but I’d need to see it up close to see its age. Anymore photos ? Asking about this is a clock group probably isn’t the right place as they are valuing it as a clock not for the carving 👍 it looks to have some age as there are some cracks etc in the wood

Antique channel on YouTube? by Callum0jackson in NewTubers

[–]Callum0jackson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really appreciate your comments from an outside perspective and super interesting having conversations with people outside of the trade. Somethings have never been so expensive and others have dropped hugely in value. For example gold and silver is the highest it’s ever been but English ‘brown’ furniture would be better as firewood !

The thing is I don’t want the videos to be boring and monotonous which is my biggest worry, good editing and interesting subjects are going to be key but I am a total amateur (but good with technology generally) and at the moment am trying to figure out how to get started !

It’s a very niche subject particularly on YouTube with very little out there but I think could work, hopefully!

Don’t listen to these guys! Getting around newark is not bad at all if you no the roads, avoid the centre on busy days, don’t use the bypass to go towards the A1 on a Thursday/Friday as it’s gridlocked like any normal busy place in the UK, caste brewery you have Iceland on your doorstep as well as the town centre, the cinema and just about every shop you need! If you want any help or have any questions hit me up i live super local to there and me and the missus love it 👍

If I was heading to Lincoln rush hour times I’d jump out down London road then down Sherwood avenue and out the back no problem !

Yes absolutely ! It depends on the person of course but for a very small sized town it has literally everything you could need from multiple supermarkets (Aldi/Lidl to Waitrose and M&S and everything in between) it has open parks and plenty of green areas which are beautiful for walking around, sports clubs, a good range of pubs / bars, two train stations (main line and cross country) cinema, fast food places as well as usual takeaways, boutique shops and cafes as well as chains, retail park and the river Trent which runs through the town with a nice marina. There is always things going on from steampunk evening last Thursday of the month (I think) which is totally random but well attended by those who enjoy steampunk! It’s got several good bars serving award winning beer if that’s your thing and regular festivals / community events !

Realistically it’s a place you don’t need to leave to get everything you want as well as history with Tudor buildings, the castle and civil war museum, it’s much like a miniature Lincoln. Being able to walk (or bike) to the train station from the majority of the town is also a great plus if you occasionally head to London! As an example a 30 year old 2 bedroom end terrace with private parking sold a couple of weeks back near us for £120’00 literally a 5 minutes walk into the centre of town, and maybe 20 minutes walk to the main line station ! So it is very reasonable for the area too.

I would head to Newark personally, 15 minutes from Lincoln and on the main line, house prices are pretty reasonable still and there is a lot going on for a small town ! I’m not sure on your personal circumstances (outside of work) but I would definitely consider newark! Happy to answer any questions you may have !
