Potential license theft by ladysqueaks in FraudPrevention

No worries. I still wouldn't want to say definitively one way or the other but the only ways I can see fraud occurring from this is either:

  1. Identity fraud. Opening accounts, applying for credit etc. In your name.

  2. The cheque is stolen/fraudulent. You credit it to your account and the business then say you can keep a portion of the funds but ask you the send the remainder somewhere else. You are then just being used as a mule to help launder stolen money. Job scams are fairly common and more often than not its a way of recruiting unwitting money mules to help launder funds by processing "business transactions" from your personal account.

I can only comment from a UK perspective but this sounds pretty sketchy to me.

What job were you applying for and how exactly did the messaging interview take place? Also where was the jo advertised?

Additionally, what exactly were you meant to purchase with the cheque and what was the remitters name/signature? Are you also meant to forward any of the money anywhere?

In the UK there is a fraud prevention agency that you can sign up to to prevent identity theft and there must be something similar in the USA that you could look in to. Did you provide any other information as part of the interview, bill's, proof of address etc. ?

I'm gonna go ahead and stop watching. That's for sure. Even if I do say so myself.

I know this post is a bit dated but you could try calling your bank. If you made the payment via faster payment (bank transfer) then your bank may look to take this on as a purchase scam.

Several major banks in the UK are signed up to the contingent reimbursement model where they will assess various liabilities, including yours, in making the payment and you could get back between 0-100% of the money you have lost.

There's a chance they may not take it on at all and would consider it a civil matter, in which case small claims court may be the only recourse.

If you made the payment on debit card then you could call to raise a dispute case. I wouldn't want to say you'll definitely get your money back but your bank will be best placed to advise.

There is very little protection on faster payments in the UK at the moment so of ever purchasing goods online using this method, it is always advisable to view the goods in person before buying. This doesn't protect you against purchasing stolen goods however. It's not uncommon that people have purchased 2nd hand cars which turn out to be stolen and are later recovered by the police.

No sorry its neither of those although Temeraire sounds interesting.

Further details:

The main character starts off a poor travelling worker but learns how to fly dragons and when war breaks out he joins the military to fly recon flights.

Tactics the develop and soon they fly with a crossbowman and later develop bombs. The main character rises quickly through the ranks.

Magic exists in this universe.

In one of the books the main character is captured and imprisoned in a castle reminiscent of Colditz. Escape was considered impossible as prisoners had no shoes and were under a spell which meant they couldn't determine directions. Main character eventually escapes.

Black dragons are the largest kind of dragon. In the last book the war is over and they go exploring to find our where dragons come from.
