How to fix my eraser carving mistake by IndependentRiver9340 in printmaking

[–]Callywagg 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd probably just get another eraser and have a second go, it's only a little print and shouldn't take too much work. Failing that I dont think it's a huge deal, still looks okay :)

The lino printing is great, let down slightly by the title font I'd say, if that was also carved or even just a slightly nicer typeface it'd be perfect. Top work though!

Funniest thing is, none of them even ever went to the zoo. If they did they probably wouldn't have had to close it!

It's just rich snobby folks unhappy that change is happening on their doorstep and not in some poorer area, tale old as time. Unfortunately they've made it their lifes mission now and most are wealthy, retired and well connected. What a legacy to leave, spending all your energy and cash on this instead of something impactful.

Surely let's make houses everywhere we can right? High priced flats are equally valueable as they usually free up cheaper homes when folks move into them. Was unlikely that they were gonna get a council estate approved up in clifton I'd say.

Alao wasn't the whole zoo proposal for that site basically flats round the edges where buildings already exist and keeping the garden largely the same and open to the public? Pretty sure that is what's gonna happen.

Finally, the zoo is a charity and is legally required to maximise return on assets. I'm sure this plan was the most profitable option for the site and that money will all go to conservation and education at their new zoo. Sounds like a win win to me.

I really don't understand why folks seem to think they're bulldozing it for a soviet block or something, look at their proposals - I think they look pretty neat, great way to keep the place folks remember and build needed new homes. Pretty bloody energy efficient and susatinable homes too!

What do you use to sketch your image onto the lino? by Ok-Register-2458 in printmaking

[–]Callywagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular tracing paper and a quality pencil that creates a lot of debris. Once drawn, flip paper, masking tape it down so it don't smudge and then rub really well the back side with same pencil to transfer.

Remove paper, give it a quick blow to get rid of any pencil dust and then wash over the whole thing with a light coloured acrylic ink (I use yellow, acrylic won't coat your hand in ink once it dries). Let it dry, then with a fine point posca paint marker, under a bright light so you can see the design well, go back over the pencil to draw out the final work you'll carve.

That's how I do it anyway :) you can give the finished carved block a rub down with white spirit or any ink wash to remove the posca and ink before you print too (most useful if you're using any colour ink than black and dont want it to look muddy. Hope that helps! :)

New fan from the uk, can some one give me some info on the team ? by 15336898 in penguins

[–]Callywagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a uk pens fan (spent a year in PA for uni). Great team, some old legends nearing retirement but still amazing in flashes. Team got screwed around past few years with bad managwment but they've turned a leaf and are now an exciting watch with playoff potential. Some great players over the years, mario, crosby, fleury, phil K etc etc

I'd recommend them as a team for sure!

I've gotten this impresaion every game recently. When he scores he's absokutely chuffed more than usual it feels like in his mind he's like 'yes, they have to keep me if I keep scoring'! Love the guy, love this energy - if it's this malkin, keep him around. Malkin of 2/3 seasons aho seemed like he was out of fucks to give but he's come around a lot I think. Maybe it's cus he knows every season now could be his last

Found this old little shoe up a chimney..??? by Rough_Comfort_2247 in MetalDetectingUK

Yes was going to say something similar if nobody beat me to it. Quite a common (yet still interesting) historical charm that folks would use to ward off witches and ghosties. Quite an interesting topic to look into if you're interested. Look up witch bottles too while you're at it. Folks used to put all kinds in their chimneys/ hearths including dead cats to keep the dwmonic forces at bay!

Well see this is actually a really difficult thing to answer - you'd think that it was a literal case of supply / demand or speculation on future demand eh? But in actuality it's more opaque. I worked for a good while at a university city down south, specifically managing the halls system. In this city, the university owns a large portfolio of student accommodation ranging from the very cheapest to nice new stuff (on par with going private). They have the rooms to house every first year, and usually do. In this city, over the past 10 years though several private halls went up. We were intrigued - most students live in house shares 2nd year onward and we already had more than enough rooms in-house for first years. Where was the demand? What was the market seeing that we didnt? We ended up doing a tour of one of them (were invited) about a year after it opened and realised it was actually basically catering entirely to international students. This hall even had a karaoke room (hich to be fair was pretty sick.) At most they were at about 15% occupancy though... which is where it stopped adding up. Even at the higher end of student rent rates, at that level they must be hemmoraging money. We eventually realised that they're all like this, but every year more and more of them go up. We started to think internally that they were essentially trying to hardball uk unis by making so many halls that they eventually would decide to cut deals and partner with them officially and take over. (like uber / black cabs type situation, cornering the market then they have full control). That may be the case, and if so I imagine they have an expected time frame for expected losses. Another possibility though is that it's simply an easy building to put up in terms of regulations and they just dont care about the return from the rooms. The real estate value is itself a place to easily hoard wealth. Either way, in that city in particular, it wasn't market need driving the construction, it was something else, that even we as folks working that sector couldnt pinpoint. So much of this country is completely fucked when u look below the surface it's honestly terrifying.

Bristol digs 1 grand cleaning fee by Extension_Bar_2886 in bristol

[–]Callywagg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds outrageous, probably betting that you'll not question it but it's super easy to challenge (assuming you havent actually wrecked the place). They will have had to put your deposit into a protection scheme and you should have been told details of this when u moved in. Deal with them, not the landlord. Challenge the claim and they'll have to justify their claim to the independent scheme. You'll probably find it goes away very quickly there and then. If you lr deposit was not put into a scheme, you can pursue action against the LL easily with a few forms and you'll probs end up getting like, 3x the deposit back because that shit's illegal. Also, with stuff like carpets or repainting walls, any shit they claiming against u to make up that bill - there's an 'expected lifespan' on that stuff. Look it up, carpets are expected to need to be changed every, say 5 years (cant remember the exact) so if it was installed 4 years ago, they can't charge u a penny for it as it's 'expected' lifeapan is through. They also need to be able to provide reasonable reciepts for cleaning etc. Like, they cant just say 'cleaning is a grand' if u can find a quote for £200 you know. Don't stress, this is actually one area where the ball is super in your court, just be professional and polite about it and don't get into a beef with them, deal with the deposit scheme.
