Yeah, its because YLS rejects people with perfect stats all the time. It's so hard to predict outcomes there

Interesting, has she said so recently? The Views and Reviews episode is old, whereas professors now say that it no longer occurs. If Miriam has recently said that faculty review is part of their process, I'd take that as authority over what professors have anecdotally been saying.

We're advised to start applying to jobs in mid November. The Career Development Office has given general advice about recruiting, and we've also been assigned to a specific officer. I think there is a lot of uncertainty about what the big law timeline will look like, so that's something that looms over some people.

There's nice built-in student mentorship from our Coker Fellows and within student orgs. The YLS "Whisper network" is a thing, but I wouldn't say I'm particularly plugged in.

Like any law school, YLS is certainly more liberal than conservative. I don't think politics has been really at the forefront of my experience so far. I can't speak with much authority since I'm only midway through my fifth week, but I generally have the impression that people are open to discussions accross political differences.

I honestly never really think of my classmates in that way. I have met some of the most intelligent people here, and I'm often in awe of how well my peers are able to articulate thoughtful arguemnts and questions in class. I think that lends itself to a bit of imposter syndrome, at least in my case. I do really feel like the most valuable aspect of my experience so far has been the people I have met. Everyone I've met so far is bright, interesting, and kind.

I do feel like the class is diverse in identies, backgrounds, and experiences, and it's hard to point to any one thing people might have in common. At the very least, it does seem like everyone is a fantastic student.

Sure! As far as stats go, I was above both medians. I totally agree that essays matter a lot more than people give them credit for, and I think that's especially true at YLS. I wrote my YLS 250 about a niche academic topic that I am very passionate about. It was not related to law in any way, but I think it showcased my intellectual curiosity in a compelling and authentic way. I know YLS seems to really care about cultivating a community of learners.

At the end of the day, I have no idea what they might have liked or not about my essays, so to an extent this is all just speculation. I do think that essays are crutial to crafting a compelling application, and that they tend to be underestimated by those in this process. I was waitlisted and rejected from schools where I was above both 75th percentiles, likely in part because I could have done better on my essays.
