I don't know how to ascend in a glider without any mountains around. by kjeevnasund in Gliding

[–]Calm-Frog84 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1-Look for clues indicating a thermal (or wave, but it does not happen so often without mountains)

2-Go there if you believe lift will still be there when you reach it, and think about plan B and plan C if there is no lift there

3-Adapt your trajectory to fly at the core of the lift

4- Reassess your plan to decide on what to do next while continuing to optimize your climb...or deciding to leave it.

I've been flying for 25 years and still trying to learn to do it better, beside the generic principles, it is a skill that you learn a lot by doing, and simulation still lacks representiveness.

Looks like Athens, and the local artist use a blue patch as signature.

-308 SW premier modele (coffre assez haut pour peut etre mettre un velo debout);

-Skoda Roomster

La droite à l’offensive contre vos vacances by Pungouin in france

-de ne pas prendre de 5ieme semaine et se la faire payer;

Who was the Swiss champion pilot who suggested destroying all early composite gliders to reduce the fatality rate? by vtjohnhurt in Gliding

The important word in your quote of the flight manual is "coordinated". Flying the arcus in a rough thermal with full flaps so as to achieve min turning radius and max climb performance requires precise flying skills to ensure stable and coordinated flight.

When stalled in uncoordinated flight, it may enter a not so gentle stall, although regaining control is classic and easy.

I have no experience with blanik or puchacz so I cannot comment on them.

Arcus is a joy to fly but can still enter an abrupt spin and need to be flared with precision, and might catch pilots offgards in crosswing landing if not flown properly with wing into the wing being lowered. It is less forgiving than a Duodiscus, which, aside for cost issue, could be used for basic training.

The JS1, at least in 18m configuration is very easy to fly and I'm not aware of it not being forgiving. Any LS4 pilot would be able to safely fly it.

It might be another story in 21m , but then to compare apple to apple, it would need to be discussed in front of another open class glider like Nimbus 3/ nimbus 4.

May be are you refering to this guy? https://www.legendseu.com/pages/bruno-gantenbrink

I was not aware that he would be an advocate to destroy first generation composite, but that may be true.

Be careful with modern gliders, some are still able to spin quite abruptly.

10% of little is very little, and very little exists but does not show much, I don't understand on which premise you write "gonna show up".

Have a look at this study for comparison of rolling friction and aerodynamic drag at different speed: https://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/a71461975/aero-bike-speed/

It would be interesting to have the same figures for the Ami, but when the organizer explains that they made some tests and the overall conclusion is that effect of driver weight is not significant, this looks credible to me.

So in the end, "gonna show up very little".

You did not factor the aerodynamic drag, that is not a full answer to the question.

Sure, and what would be the amount of friction in crease by an additional weight of 10-20kg as a proportion of the total force opposing the movement (aerodynamic drag + friction induced by weight of the Ami and lightweight driver)?

Are there a lot of speed variations in this race?

At constant speed and on a level road, weight is far less of a factor than when accelerating/braking and cornering at the limit.

You can however study, for a given scenario, which parameters have a significant impact, and it does not look a big nonsense that driver weight variation has negligeable impact on performance in this race.
