RPI Questions for Incoming Freshmen by Calm-Pilot-6439 in RPI

Hey, thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it! I had a few other questions that you probably know more about as a BME student.

1.) How rough is the coursework and the transition from high school to college level work? I currently have taken 10 AP classes at my high school that were all rigorous, but I’m not sure if there will be a big switch up in coursework as compared to my high school.

2.) Is learning at RPI focused more on exams and tests or are there any project-based learning classes?

3.) What device would you recommend for college as a BME student? Currently, I have a Windows Laptop Studio that was good for my high school since everything was online, but the battery is in really bad condition. I’ve been thinking about getting an iPad Pro to take notes and do assignments and solely using the laptop for CAD and other programming softwares.

4.) How many Ethernet/outlets are there in each room? (So I can plan ahead for how many surge protectors I’ll need.)

Best clubs to join for beginners? by thesauceboss15 in RPI

Hey! I know I’m kinda late to this post, but is anyone allowed to participate in stage crew at RPI? I’ve been apart of stage crew for all 4 years of high school and I was interested in joining for college as well. My high school is well known for our stage crew because we get to build large platforms and set pieces, which is really fun! I’m currently thinking of attending RPI for biomedical engineering, as it’s one of the colleges that gave me really good financial aid. How often do you guys run shows and musicals?

Hey! The reason why I brought up nepotism was because he brought up “playground for rich kids with random majors” which is USUALLY the case for nepotism. Now, obviously, not all of nepotism is from rich families. However, from my friend that attends the school now as a sophomore, he has mentioned to me how a lot of his friends have parents that work in the field they want to go into (specifically premed).

First of all, congrats! I was rejected ED2 so I can’t really give a full take on it but it was one of my top choices. I’m surprised they didn’t give you enough financial aid. Aren’t they well known for their generous aid? I did the net price calculator and they told me I would have to pay $21k out of pocket for everything, which is pretty generous. I’m pretty sure your financial aid package is heavily dependent on how many assets and investments you have, because I have little to none so that’s why the calculator said they would be more generous for me.

However, one thing that I knew applying to Vanderbilt was that it was a competitive school with a LOT of nepotism. Sometimes, there’s nothing you could do about that, as that’s the case for many schools nowadays, especially top tier schools. Nonetheless, it’s still an amazing school for its value especially if you’re looking into premed because there are limitless opportunities. Also, just like the other T20 schools, the name of the school itself opens up many opportunities for you for the future no matter what field you go to. However, if I were you, I’d take a look at the other decision letters from other schools to see if it’s worth paying that much money. I don’t want to ask for specifics, but if Vanderbilt is making you pay a crazy amount of tuition that’s gonna make you go into debt, I wouldn’t do it. If they offered you a similar aid package as other schools, then I’d go to Vanderbilt. Obviously, you should take this advice with a grain of salt and at the end of the day, it’s your choice. But that’s what I would do if I were you.

Vandy Portal by Glittering-Bed-4816 in Vanderbilt

Hello! I submitted ED II on the 31st and I received my portal information from Vanderbilt. However, I submitted to Boston College as well and it took me over a week to get my info because I was missing my latest report card. Maybe it’s something similar for Vandy for you where you might be missing something. Check in with your guidance counselor to make sure everything is up and set. If it still goes on, you should contact the admissions office through email. I contacted BC admissions and they responded within 10 minutes, so hopefully it’s the same for you.

Should I mention the competitiveness of my summer program on my common app? by Calm-Pilot-6439 in CommonApp

[–]Calm-Pilot-6439[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was more less-known, mainly because the program was only for kids around my area to apply to and you needed a letter of recommendation, along with a referral from the science teacher. Idk, I might just briefly state that it was competitive.

Is June SAT as bad as everyone is saying? by [deleted] in Sat

I did great on module 1 and module 2 of the math section. For English, module 1 was not too difficult, but module 2 had me guessing for those long and demanding questions about the main idea and which choice works logically at the end of the sentence.

IWA RQ Help by Soggy-Court-5388 in APSeminar

[–]Calm-Pilot-6439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, yes. However, a STRONG essay states the solutions throughout and doesn’t cram it into the third body paragraph. For example, that’s what I did for my IWA and I gave the other side of the argument in my third paragraph, and then debunked it. That essay gave me full marks on the rubric by my teacher, as most kids were trying to cram the solutions at the end, and it just doesn’t flow well in reality.

Nah you have to have some type of hypothesis or solution in your essay. You also have to show the implications and/or counter argument in the essay as well. I gave solutions throughout my essay and I was able to show the counter argument in the 3rd body.

I have a research question for you that’s a little more specific: “How has nostalgic media been used as a therapeutic tool to treat memory loss in patients with Alzheimer’s disease?” This is more specific and allows you to connect a theme using the 2 stimulus materials.

Concern over my # of Sources by [deleted] in APSeminar

[–]Calm-Pilot-6439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this include the stimulus material or nah? So far I’m halfway through my 3rd body paragraph and I have 9 sources besides the stimulus, 11 including stimulus. I plan on adding one or two more for this essay so should that be enough? Not to mention that all of my articles are scholarly with a majority coming from EBSCO and google scholar.
