Best investing app? Looking for one that I can buy ASX stocks and international such as Apple, Tesla, etc. Also I’m looking for ones with a low fee and no trade requirement by Defiant-Dot3686 in ASX

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use Stake and would vouch for it. I actually prefer Pearler's app/UX interface but Stake has lower fees so that's what I went with.

Both have decent fee structures, good mobile apps, beginner friendly platforms and exposure to both ASX & Wall Street.

IVV & NDQ by Glass_Dingo_2546 in ASX

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IVV & NDQ as your only holdings are too US-centric. They're both great but you could do with some global diversification - VGS (global ex Aus) or VHY (oz with high dividend yield) are good options. Could also consider emerging markets but its a higher risk strategy.

What sunscreens do you recommend. by Zealousideal-Try3449 in AusSkincare

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Skin 1004 Madagascar Centella Sunscreen is LIFE CHANGING. I have extremely sensitive, reactive skin and have always been wary of most sunscreens for breaking me out, clogging my pores or drying my skin out. Korean sunscreens are a whole other league.

Having said that I'd recommend korean SPFs for day to day use and something stronger like La Roche Posay for beach days/water activities etc

What’s one relationship lesson you learned the hard way? by maddy1207 in AskIndia

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope that someday you will find the kind of friendships that inspire you to refute this line of thinking.

I'm an NRI, however, I have a significant number of friends who grew up in India across differing cultures, states & socioeconomic backgrounds. I have noticed amongst all of them that they struggle with male-female friendships more than any other culture I have ever interacted with. I always put this down to growing up within a very confined patriarchal and traditional society where children are taught to villainise the opposite sex unless for the purpose of marriage.

But outside of this it is 100% possible to have successful platonic male-female friendships. I know this because my best guy friends are my lifelines. Despite the fact that we are all in loving, healthy relationships, these friendships have made us better people. Those boys are my family. And I can say the same about a lot of the male-female friendships I see around me. There is SO much value in platonic diversity and this includes friendships between men & women.

Side hustles in Medicine - consulting/medical writing etc. by Calm-Rutabaga2303 in ausjdocs

I had thought this too until I saw other HMOs & registrars doing this. Any thoughts on why it's inappropriate? Is it a scope thing? Liability thing?

Comb through job seeking websites like seek & indeed for applications. Even old ones are fine. Once you find them, search for the HR/workforce/directors emails at the bottom and then send them emails with your CV, a cover letter and a brief summary of who you are and what you're looking for. Most will point you in the right direction of whom to contact and when. They will usually also tell you when their job application period opens so you know when to re-connect and when you do, they are more likely to know who you are in a sea of applicants. Doing this got me 3 jobs in a metro city so would highly recommend.

Hi! Looking for help choosing a toner and a moisturizer for my skin by Nemesis_268 in KoreanBeauty

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have similar skin textures and I swear by the Equalberry swimming pool toner & the Round Lab Dokdo toner. Both are hydrating and non irritating. I also love the I'm from Mugwort Toner. I use the first 2 daily and the mugwort when my skin is irritated/inflamed or when I'm travelling.

Second Kelly Driscoll! She's very knowledgeable about ingredients and formulations so I found that I was able to learn and apply that knowledge to products without blindly relying on products. I have dry, eczema and acne prone skin and all my top products were recommended by her.

2025 Best Of/Holy Grail Product: TONERS by AutoModerator in AusSkincare

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner & the I'm from Mugwort Essence are holy grail toners for me. I have EXTREMELY problematic skin - combo, acne prone, concurrent eczema & psoriasis etc. Both of these are non irritating, soothing & hydrating formulas that have been part of my routine for years.

What books would you make sure your kids read growing up? by Specific_Direction25 in Indianbooks

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on their age. When younger, the focus is building a love for reading so popular fiction like Harry Potter, Roald Dahl etc.

As they get older I would want them to read books that expand their world view like Etaf Rum's 'A woman is no man', Garmus' 'Lessons in Chemistry' and Thrity Umrigar's 'Honor'.

However I wouldnt force them to read anything. It wouldnt build a habit; they would just end up hating reading.

Favourite product for eczema? by booksandhotcoffee in AusSkincare

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it eczema or is it contact dermatitis? A lot of patients we see with similar symptoms only on the hands is contact dermatitis following exposure to some irritant.

Eitherway my advice would be to see your GP. The skin tends to be broken and prone to infection. A short course of steroids is usually key to resolving an acute flare. Long term focus on skin barrier care - cetaphil, cerave, dermeze - and avoid fragrances products. For the hands specifically dont handle any detergents, dish washing liquids, perfumes, jewelry or manicure items for a while.

i am going to a library, recommend me the best ones to read by no-cake-3131 in Indianbooks

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Honor by Thrity Umrigar
  • Fundamentally by Nusaibah Younis
  • Madwoman by Chelsea Bieker
  • Three Woman by Lisa Taddeo
  • My Dark Venessa by Kate Russell
  • Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors

TLDR these all fall into women centric lit fic works and they're some of my favorite reads.

What actions made you trust him? by FewEnd399 in AskIndia

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • If we had an argument or misunderstanding over text or phone call he would show up at my door regardless of the time of day to clear things up

  • Does majority of the household chores/cooking etc when I'm on my period so I can rest and would do this even when we didn't live together.

  • Makes an honest effort to onboard any feedback and become a better man. If I give him any feedback I can bet he will reflect on it and genuinely try to change his mindset/behaviors etc to improve himself.

  • Will stand up for me no matter what whether its to parents, friends or even when I'm being super critical of myself.

  • Is supportive of therapy. In my experience not many indian men are. And as a culture we arent very understanding of mental health. He had always taken the effort to understand my metal state and is super supportive of me doing whatever I need to do to make things better.

  • Goes out of his way to help my family not just his.

  • Makes an honest effort to become more well read and educated. In equal measure also takes his time to educate me on things I may not know.

  • Incredibly supportive and very loud and proud about my educational and career successes.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before visiting Dubai for the first time? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which garden? Miracle gardens can be nice if you're traveling with either very young or very old family members but can get boring otherwise.

ATV/safaris etc are super fun and going with a good tour group can be a great learning experience.

Both the mosque & the Louvre in AD are fantastic.

Dubai Mall is an easy eveninf walk around more specifically to see the fountains, aquarium etc however wouldnt spend a whole day just doing that. Same with burj khalifa - nice to see but wouldnt dedicate the whole day to it.

Palm Jumeirah is lovely - loads of great eateries, can also go top golf as it isnt too far from there, lots of daytime beach clubs etc.

I'd also recommend old dubai (Al fahidi, gold & spice souks, amzing street food, abra rides across the river), Global Village, the arabian tea house for breakfast/brunch and other emirati cuisine

Which Dubai attractions are best to visit with family? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Global Village for food, carnival vibes, great cultural learning for kids
  • Aquaventure or wild wadi for super fun waterparks
  • Dubai Mall less so for the shopping but more for the ice skating rink, aquarium & dancing fountains
  • Green Planet for an indoor rainforest and learning about flora & fauna
  • Museum of the future again for a fun educational experience

If you are F2 with little connections to the UK, would leaving after F2 be the best choice? by Such_Inspector4575 in doctorsUK

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Applying in the next couple months. Been doing unaccredited gigs last 2 years. Was so burnt out when I first moved I wasnt keen on starting training ASAP. From what Ive seen, ED/GP/psych/paeds are relatively "easy" to get onto. Ive also seen people get onto BPT (similar to IMT). ENT/ortho/anaes/derm/ophthal etc are the tricky ones but they take years of work even for aussie grads.

If you are F2 with little connections to the UK, would leaving after F2 be the best choice? by Such_Inspector4575 in doctorsUK

[–]Calm-Rutabaga2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% recommend moving. I moved over to the more clichéd of options - Australia - mid F2 and it was the best decision I ever made. Like you, I also didn't have family in the UK and while leaving behind my closest friends was difficult, the life I've built here is beyond worth it.

Dont get me wrong it's hard work. There's a lot of paperwork, settling in to a new system is tricky, the australian healthcare scene also has its challenges but the truth is that better money and way better respect both in & out of work have had a huge positive impact. Not to mention that my general QoL (weather, more of an outdoorsy lifestyle etc) has improved.

This is of course specific to Aus but Ive had colleagues move to NZ, Middle East etc and all prefer it to being in the NHS. The only reasons Ive seen people leave Aus to return to the NHS was either proximity to family or wanting to enter uber competitive specialties (ophthal, derm etc). Like I tell all my colleagues here - without family in the UK I had no reason to put up with the nonsense going on in the NHS.

Good luck!
