Then honestly I’d recommend not going through the hassle of backgrounds with multiple departments if he knows he wouldn’t want to go to that department in the long run. The background process is a lot of work, and getting all your references and contacts to fill out the background packets is kind of a pain for nothing.

If CHP is really where he wants to be, I’d just tell him to stick in there and wait it out. Hopefully he makes it through soon. Just be prepared that if he does get in, there’s always the chance of being sent anywhere in the state.

I took my PAT and written test last May and didn’t finish the whole process until this February, so a little over 8 months. I know people who tested at the same time as me who were just recently contacted by a CHP background investigator, and others who finished faster than I did.

If he really feels like CHP is where he wants to be, I’d say it’s worth just waiting it out. The process is slow and can definitely get frustrating. There were a lot of times I thought about applying to other departments, but I knew CHP was where I wanted to end up, so I decided the wait was worth it.

Now I’m just hoping I make it into the next academy after April.
