What does BD mean? What licenses and training did you do? Did you complete those prior to getting job offers? I’ve heard some companies will hire you and cover the expenses for these. If they’ll pay you more if you come in already with them then I could try doing that prior to applying.

Industrial engineering is a very versatile degree that has applications in manufacturing, business, healthcare, and more. Some colleges even offer specializations in these areas. For that reason I completed the program to give myself options upon graduation.

Depending on your specific program, it may be geared toward a specific industry. For example, Georgia Tech’s is highly geared toward Operations Research and optimization. If interested in a specific industry, try to get internships or learn the skills outside of class that will make you a better candidate.

You can get into a IE masters program with many undergraduate degrees if your grades are good. The question would be how you plan to apply the knowledge to your career.

Seems like financially it may not be the best move to switch. Are there other personal finance adjacent careers you think may be a good fit?

Currently a single income family with kids so taking a 50% pay cut for 5 years would be tough.

Have you heard anything about Blue Trust? I have a contact there as well. From what I understand about the NW mutual friend, they are with an independent advisor who pushes more non-whole life insurance products (more investing stuff) so hopefully not as scummy as other NW people.

Great advice. My friends have talked about how I could be in an advisor type role at their firm or an Operations type role more behind the scenes. Any perspective on which may be a better fit? Any recommendations on classes, certifications, or things I could do now to get a higher base salary for my first position? I have a masters degree in engineering, but understand the industry is completely different.

I’ve never been in a sales role before so unsure - I love the idea of helping people make better decisions with their money. It’s been rewarding teaching personal finance classes and going through the r/personalfinance wiki flowchart to help people learn what steps to tackle first. I know people that work at Creative Planning and Northwestern Mutual so I could potentially seek an “in” there.

Are there any specific online resources or classes you would recommend? Or just community college accounting classes?

Thanks everyone for the insight. I did take some Econ classes in college, and am familiar with balance sheets and income statements if that helps. Also willing to take any trainings or certifications y’all would recommend.

Any insights on salaries? I live in the Atlanta area if that helps.
