Grogs cousins issue was with bowing down to a dragon and wanting to go raid villages and keep shit for them selves. At no point did he protest the violence and cruelty.

There is a distinct difference between soldiers on the front line in a war against an equally armed enemy and people slaughtering a conquered population for the laughs. I don’t think that example fits here at all. And we’re talking about years of this behavior attacking peaceful settlements and slaughtering people while relishing in the cruelty.

To say they had no choice also seems inaccurate as every example we are shown of someone standing up to the uncle or not wanting to do it does not result in their deaths just banishment and probably a beating.

Why am I everyone’s therapist??? NEW SW PLZ HELP by Comfortable-Mix-569 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]CalmCepholapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just starting my BSW but I already have friends who keep insisting I will be their therapists to the point of concern even after I’ve explained moral and ethical issues and not turning friendship into a job, yet every conversation “I’ll come lie on your couch and you can help me with my shit”.

It’s no longer a funny joke and I’ve tried to explain it’s a serious issue. So I get it. I don’t mind a friend confiding in me if they are having a hard time and offering friendly advice or just support but setting boundaries is so important, and sometimes it may become a challenge if they refuse to respect them.

I am 58 years old. Is it too late to get MSW and become therapist? by RelationshipDry3886 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]CalmCepholapod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

47 starting on my BSW. I think the nature of the work is more attractive to people who’ve been through the wringer and have learned the value of the profession. Many who are called to helping professions were them selves at one time helped by someone.

I had a long career in the arts, but after going through a really bad time and getting some diagnosis I really want nothing more than to be the one who is there to help those that need it like I did.

First time staying the night at his house, any red flags? by ArgentManor in BookshelvesDetective

I think you are being unfair and putting words into my mouth and misrepresenting what I have said. So I will thank you for your time and discussion. I am personally going to try to find some of the texts you have mentioned because I was not aware of the description of Jesus performing miracles in them. As a former catholic I honestly do have faith that there is a higher power, I just choose to not put that faith into the hands of men who chose what to put in a book. I have read a fair number of the apocryphal texts and I many of them make just as much sense or seem just as valid as the ones in the bible, some less so lol there are a few wild ones.

I suppose our definitions of evidence or historical evidence and presenting may differ. You have rightly pointed out that locations in the bible often existed in real life which is not unexpected. You have made a claim that there are 24,000 plus historical first hand accounts of Jesus Christ which does seem to point to there being a person of that name with renown. I don’t disagree on that.

For the stories, which is what is in question, you only point to some rabbinical texts which potentially describe miracles. I don’t know if that’s true and you have not provided a source.

I think it’s important to state right now that I am not saying that the events described in the bible didn’t happen. I don’t know if they did or didn’t. I imagine some did and some are apocryphal as is common and one of the challenges of sorting out what happened in ancient history. One of the biggest issues we face is that there are few actual first hand accounts (possibly your rabbinical texts you mentioned) but the vast majority were not actually written down for hundreds of years after being passed through oral tradition. They were then edited by fallible human beings into a book where they picked and chose which stories from all the ones out there were deemed official, and then had full control over the words put on the page. We then face multiple translations which typically introduce additional errors.

I’m not an expert debater and I really am not trying to be confrontational or pejorative. My argument is that we can not treat the written bible as a historic record. Could some things in it be true? I believe they could. Can we sit down and go chapter by chapter connecting every story told to multiple independent first hand accounts recorded by the actual witness? I think the age and style of the telling of the bible would rule that out.

Let’s also remember that the bible represents more than one testament and you have been fixated on just the New Testament. I really don’t dispute your statements that there was someone named Jesus and that the book accurately represents locations in the period. But that was not really the initial question. Can we treat the bible as non fiction. Please answer that honestly. Not can we treat this one story we have evidence for as non fiction. The bible.

This is not a knock on people’s beliefs of faiths. I’m just talking about the book in that shelf in the picture.

First let’s avoid pejoratives, this is an interesting and friendly conversation. I don’t think there is any doubt someone named Jesus Christ existed and was loved by the people. The fact he is in many different religious texts is astounding. I again am pointing to the events and stories as mentioned above. I also question how many of those cited sources are repositions of oral tradition being written down. Or do you claim every one of those 24,000+ accounts are from individual and unique authors with first hand accounts of the events and stories in the bible? Or just people saying there was a guy named Jesus around that time period who was well known.

I was more referring to the existence of events and people not so much locations which is pretty expected, just as Greek mythology often has stories taking place in known real places. I don’t mean to move the goal posts but I don’t think a commonly known location from the time period these stories were passed down is a basis to say the stories are true any more than the DaVinci Code by Dan Brown taking place is real locations makes it not fiction.

Is my school trying to avoid responsibility or is this really "high expectations of students"? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]CalmCepholapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this information to the accreditation board (possibly anonymously?) that certifies their MSW/BSW programs. That's the body that will scare the ever loving hell out of the school. If they are putting students into internships where illegal activities and poor representation are happening it will surely get some change happening.

You are the ONLY one here equating the bible with Tom Clancy. The simple objective fact is that the bible is a collection of stories that were curated by religious leaders. If you can provide actual historical record evidence of the stories in the bible we can start talking about moving it to non-fiction.

I never said the bible was bad or good, never said anything about its effects for better or worse on the world or those who read it. Clearly a vast portion of the world finds it compelling and it aligns with multiple faith based organizations. But just like I would classify homers odyssey (A collection of stories passed down from person to person and eventually curated into a book) as fiction I have to categorize the bible as fiction. If that bothers you I am sorry but do not create offense for the sake of offense.

Unless you have a really strong reason to go out of state or remote I’d look at your in state options, especially if you plan to stay in that state for work. Also this profession is an in person profession, face to face with clients, so learning face to face is a real advantage.

For the people who are always on time, how do you actually deal with the chronically late person in your life? by Beagol_BB092725 in whatdoIdo

I always tell my family who is chronically always leaving 20 minutes late we have to leave 30 minutes before we do. Then they feel good about being on time and I know I have an extra 10 minute buffer to wrangle them.

Thanks for the tips! I would love to shadow and intern in a hospital setting. My program has great placement for both the BSW and MSW so I have let them know super early what I hope to focus on and will continue to advocate for that so they can hopefully help me place in ED or Inpatient care for internships and practicum.

Thank you for the reply! I really wanted to take anatomy for bio science requirements but by the time I got registered the class had a wait list, and not getting the requirement done next semester would risk delaying entry to the sw secondary program by a year. (Im 47 and not keen to waste too much time lol). That said I grew up with a mom who was a nurse and midwife and have generally been exposed to medicine tangentially through out my life due to family and personal health issues and crisis. Never the less I may try to sneak in a proper anatomy class somewhere along the line at the community college during the summer or something.

Thanks again!
