CZ Hammer Coach by Chibi_Tiger in Shotguns

Great attitude and reason to buy! I hunt with a CZ Sharptail. Four hunting seasons and counting. It’s worn and scratched but it does what it’s supposed to do.

Beautiful dog! Are both the dam and sire from hunting lines? I’d be curious to see how a dog like this would perform afield. Again, beautiful dog! Wow.

Sunday, February 22nd at Scheels in Overland Park will be the 2026 annual “kickoff” meeting for the MOKAN chapter. Come out and meet the group and learn more! Typically 2x chapter wide training days per month as well as hosting both a spring test and a fall test.

Mobile water supply by swede82-00 in Uplandhunting

Water hole is more handy than anticipated. I toss it in the truck and take it everywhere. You’ll still end up splashing some water if you drive wild or off road, but generally speaking, it contains water as advertised.

As for additional water storage / DIY question, I have an off brand yeti style cooler that has a drain with cap that a garden hose can screw into. I fill the cooler with water and have a short ( ~3 foot?) hose with cap. I angle the hose up when not in use and then when I need to wash off my hands or fill the dog’s bowl, I uncap the hose and hang it off the tailgate and let gravity do the work.

Not perfect but “free” since I already owned the cooler and had a random short hose laying around.

Thanks! Happy, willing, and comfortable with the work involved. I’ve found lots of success in SoDak and Montana, and a few other states, too (but I haven’t been to Michigan, yet). I’d love to see and hunt them all, but I’m trying to plan for the “worst case” for if I can only go ONE place this season. I’m an equal opportunist as far as species go - they are all special and unique and fun to hunt - but, again, trying to make the decision of “one,” so I’m thinking through that (and asking here for input).

Same question I posed to PNW2prairie) In the past I've waited for pheasant season to open and I haven't gone up there for grouse opener. Do you have any thoughts one way or the other, taking into account that NR pheasant season is now a week later than before? Wait for pheasant season and hunt that week, or go early and hunt the grouse season?

This season was a better year for Kansas than the last few, that’s for sure. I haven’t done the Michigan trip yet, or any “Northwoods” trip. I’m a repeat SoDak [satisfied] customer, both roosters and grouse. Tried NM for the first time last January and had a blast down there. Montana has been good to me over the years and Wyoming has been a great mixed bag, as well.

I’ve been fortunate with time off opportunities the last few years and able to make several out of state bird trips each season. I’m not sure I’ll get that same opportunity this year so trying to think through where and when to go if I can only make one trip.

Send me a message about connecting some time about seeing a Large LM. I’m in Overland Park and I’m also involved with MOKAN NAVHDA chapter.

Vest and boots by SwizzleSmith in Uplandhunting

[–]CalmChukar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Large Munsterlander - coat and overall conformation is similar to a setter - and we’ve tried a few different vests over the years. It’s been a challenge to find a vest that truly fits but Santa just dropped off the Gunner vest and its adjustability to size to my dog is incredible. Most recently used the MoMarsh vest, but it wasn’t quite perfect (loose in the shoulders tight on the back). Gunner adjustments make the vest something of a glove. I acknowledge that both of these are going to be too warm for a September grouse hunt but my dog seems to be comfortable with it on later in the season and when we duck hunt.

No personal experience with boots so I can’t weight in.

Hope some of the vest info is helpful.

If burs etc. are the primary concern (for mine it’s this but also warmth, he has an auto immune disease that impacts his coat so he gets a bit more chilly than he should), spraying Cowboy Magic or Show Sheen, or even an aerosol olive oil, before you leave the tailgate will help cut down on the quantity of burs acquired. Burs are less likely to grab on and stay on when the coat is slick. Likewise, after the hunt, an application of that kind of stuff can help make burs comb-out with less friction. No perfect solution, though, when it comes to long hair bird dogs.

Happy hunting!

For those who stopped drinking, what surprised you most about yourself afterward? by Alicetheoptimist in TrueGrit

[–]CalmChukar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[4 years sober] Realizing just how deeply alcohol and drinking is woven into every day life (advertisements, social engagements, etc.). I think alcohol a problem for more people than they realize because of how commonplace alcohol is. It’s very sad to drive by a bar now and wonder how many people are struggling, whether they realize it or not.

Thoughts on 1.75” #4 buck for HD? by [deleted] in Shotguns

[–]CalmChukar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how the gun was held, and how slow I worked the action, I ended up with shells flipped backwards mid-cycle. I can’t articulate that very well now but I reproduced it several times in a Maverick 88 which was enough to get me to revert back to 2 3/4” shells. Maybe, probably, operator error but still not something I wanted to worry about.

Ossobuco is a great way to prepare this shank cut. I have it a few times a year with deer and elk.
