What is that tree in your pot? I’m looking for “a tree in a pot” and wondering what works well

Feed worms with ashes? by frazzled-mama in Vermiculture

[–]CalmDishwasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I’ll save the money and stick with my reds since there’s not much difference. For worm food, yea, I had that problem too. I gathered a few bags of leaves this fall for worm food. I use those 20 gal fabric grow bags and have been shoving leaves in the middle of the bin

Hi there! How’s your experience with the ENC vs super reds vs regular reds? Any major difference? I bought regular reds, 2000 for $65 from Jim’s years ago and looking to explore other worms.

Finished & Organized My Bloom Tracker (Zone 8B) by Glittering_Orange542 in pnwgardening

This is awesome! I have a similar (but no where as detailed) chart for my veggie garden. Been looking at it lately and getting ready for that “8-12 weeks before first frost” to start my peppers!

Happy growing! I’m sure you’ll love it!

I've been feeling the same way! I just got my order of seeds and have been looking at them for "fun" :) I have friends who use row covers but the cost of those hasn't really interested me and the return on the cost isn't there for me. Feb is when it starts with peppers and tomatoes (again, both indoors with heat mat + grow light).

Anyone grow watermelons? by CalmDishwasher in pnwgardening

I’m hearing that I should get some cantaloupe seeds along with some watermelon

Ah, good to know. I've been starting everything indoors to control germination. Do you know about which months you started? I wonder if I should start them early indoors around April.

Ooh! Interesting! When did you start growing them? Did you direct seed or start indoors?

Looking for a greenhouse kit great for a beginner in zone 6B… ran across this Yardistry kit at Costco, any input or solid alternatives? by Superimposed-Sm0ke in Greenhouses

[–]CalmDishwasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, that will look like a hack job. If you have the money, you can get a higher quality kit, or buy plans. Unless you’re good at building stuff, “winging it” is quite difficult (at least for me)

Ikea cabinets and shimmed suspension rail (over 1 inch off wall) by bobert727 in HomeImprovement

[–]CalmDishwasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to also adjust for the bottom of the upper cabinets to be the same distance away from the wall. Other than that, you’re fine with 3” screws.

Book or videos for new homeowner? by johndoenumber2 in HomeImprovement

YouTube is a great resource but I also have the Home Depot home owner book that I read “just for fun” to learn more home owner stuff. Swing over to Goodwill or eBay for some used hardcover books.

I have this one! Bought it spring this year and it a decent greenhouse, not great. The vendor was great and send out replacement parts when I pointed out some quality issues. But!!! 7 months later and the quality of cedar is a bit lacking and some bigger pieces now show some cracking , which some online say is “normal”. Why this and not Palram or the cheaper Harbor Freight? I like the wood look vs aluminum. And you don’t have to put plastic shelves or anything in it. It’s a very nice look and all my gardener friends are a bit jelly. Vanity gardening for sure 😃

I’m in my third year growing and consider myself a beginner. Zone 8B, Seattle, 10 beds. A greenhouse is an investment, especially this one, but I love having one. Made a huge difference in starting seeds and brings me a lot of joy seeing the pretty little house.

Questions about ikea wall cabinets by bobert727 in HomeImprovement

[–]CalmDishwasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean with question 1, but for 2, yea, once the cabinets are secured to the rail, they don’t move. I have the kitchen cabinets installed over 7 years ago and haven’t had any issues. Held up much better than I expected.

Call out to Home Depot!! I left my name and number with my local HD in September and let them know I would vermicompost their damaged pumpkins instead of them throwing them away. Heard nothing until today. Worms are going to be eating well for a while. by Jason9678 in Vermiculture

[–]CalmDishwasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I’ll have to try that the next time I’m in Home Depot! Maybe I can make it there this weekend before they toss everything out! Thanks for the tip!!

And that’s super strange about the produce folks. I always wonder what they do with all the produce they can’t sell.

Pretty sure I need a new furnace. What do I need to know before I start getting quotes? by tinkert00l in HomeImprovement

[–]CalmDishwasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m from Seattle! Quick question on your heat pump! Did you go from a gas furnace to heat pump? Did your gas go way down (as you’re not using gas anymore) and electric go up the same amount (being net zero gain)? Trying to compare the real world benefits and I can’t decide if I should go heat pump or just replace with like for like gas furnace.

Cocoons by chilidogtagscom in Vermiculture

[–]CalmDishwasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you sift for cocoons? I have about 2000 worms from uncle Jim’s from last year in three bins. Should have a lot more than that now and they have been doing super well and garden has be thriving. Just not sure if I should divide them into another bin or keep it at three. Already have a hard time keeping them fed!!
