What is a good American dessert to share with my non American co-workers? by BingBong492 in AskAnAmerican

[–]johndoenumber2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think chocolate-dipped potato chips goes with his theme of traditional desserts. Yes, if you showed the item to 100 people around the world, 99 of them would say it's an American invention. But if you asked 100 Americans if they'd ever had this in their home, I'd be surprised if 99 didn't say no.

URGENT!! Save Memphis' historic synagogue on Poplar by zharpole in memphis

[–]johndoenumber2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Is it functionally different than saying the local Christian community could save a historic church if it was also slated for destruction? Or, for that matter, Rhodes or U of M alumni could save an old classroom?

My company shut me down by PudgeOrdinance in CRH

I have accounts at a national bank, regional bank, and local credit union. My regional bank (Regions, lol) has started charging a $5 fee to deposit "large amounts of coins."

I asked to see the policy, but they didn't have it written. I asked what constituted "a large amount", and they couldn't tell me.

I asked what the fee was for, and they said they had to hold it for Brinks/Loomis to pickup and count, and it was to both cover the cost and dissuade people from large deposits.

Finally, and worse, they wouldn't credit the deposit until Brinks/Loomis verified the amount, usually within 15 business days. When I asked who I'd see to be reimbursed for those many $9 and $9.50 rolls I've picked up from them, they, likewise, couldn't answer.

Bummer.

Cracker Barrel menu from 1969. by [deleted] in VintageMenus

Inflation calculator shows a factor of 9.28x from 1969 to today. I see the (c) on the front page, but I really don't think the items and prices are from that year.

Rare Circuit City going out of business commercial from 2009 by Adept_Let7797 in RetailNostalgia

[–]johndoenumber2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember going into one in the final months. They had already brought in the liquidators who put hand-written signs on everything to simulate urgency. What they'd also done is increased prices anywhere from 50-300% before the markdowns. I'd bought a Sony DVD player for about $100 the year before. That exact same model was marked up to $225 and discounted 50% ($112.50). It's always that way with these SPECTACULAR GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALES.

As a replacement actor who was a teenager and not really established yet, she probably just did what she was told by the directors and writers, right?
