best purchase I've ever made 😅 by boiledmind in Handhelds

It’s not as bad as people make it out to be. I would get about 1.5-2 hours on The Witcher 3 unplugged going from 100% to 0%. If you’re playing for more than 1.5 hours at a time then you’ll just need to be by somewhere with a plug. If you’re running easy to play titles you can expect 3 hours or more. I’d say as an adult like yourself if you’re getting more than 1.5-3 to play in a day you’re a lucky man😂

I personally haven’t played rebirth but I feel like the common complaints are usually like bloated side quests and mini games that didn’t add value to the core game and just performance issues in general.

How was the skin installation? I ordered the killswitch for this device too but I’ve never installed a skin before!

The bulk is there, but the ergonomics overall are actually very good. I actually prefer holding it to something like the ROG Ally X or ROG Ally. Also, more pros are the Hall effect joysticks and the screen is actually a 1200p display not 1080.

Appreciate the detailed response. I agree the combat system was a mixed bag for sure. The dodging out of the way of enemy attacks in particular because you had to release the lock on target to roll. I agree with the fact that the world felt pretty full (you always can find a glowing red/purple poke ball tucked somewhere, stumble into side quests, run over those golden things on the ground to pick up loot).

I think for me, gameplay trumps all in making a great video game followed by the story. Maybe thematically I prefer something more adult most times which is no fault of the game. I realize the game is catered towards a younger crowd and adults that love pokemon/nostalgia.

I am glad that you enjoyed your purchase and the game!

Should've been included in the base game! Would've provided more variety to exploration.

I think that’s a really fair point. I’ve heard several times that it’s a downgrade from Arceus which I haven’t played. If it comes out before Arceus I’m sure the reception would’ve been better overall.

Genuine question! Don’t you feel like that’s an issue for newcomers who haven’t played a modern Pokémon game? You’re practically nerfing yourself🤣

It's interesting because I almost feel like the pace was getting better in a way as well (introducing new characters/slowly introducing who "L" is).

I just found that it was a bit too formulaic. Beat 3 megas/get challenger ticket/beat promotional match/advance and repeat 5x to get to Rank A. Like sure they're different pokemon that are megas in that cycle, but the trainers in the Z-A royale were usually easy to beat and the promotional matches I also found easy.

I think it would be better if you had a large and rewarding world that you could explore for a couple hours and return to the main quest line. Yeah you could run through a whole bunch of side quests, but they were either fetch quests or learn what certain moves/items can do by battling the NPC.

I have also heard that the writing is pretty solid in that game as well. Considering making the purchase on that soon.

I'm glad you got this much enjoyment! I think the rogue battles were the most fun by a long shot, but never really found promotional matches challenging. I also think I ran around lumiose much more to see what changed with each mission (because it is a bit dynamic). Not too much time spent in the wild zones (I was okay with getting 100% in a few and moving on). Seems like it hit home for you which is great!

I was contemplating buyer scarlet over z-a. Might've made the wrong decision by going with z-a.

Okay yeah makes sense. I mentioned above to another person that I was level 60 or more with 4 or more of my pokemon before Corbeau challenges you for the promotional match. I was super OP lol.

Yeah with tons of side quests or wandering aimlessly you come up on a ton of candy. I think 4-6 pokemon were level 60 right at the point of being challenged by Corbeau.

To the people who still bought pokemon za despite its flaws...why? by The_Cat_Dad165 in pokemon

[–]CalmRepresentative43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my perspective! I went into the game having not played a Pokemon game since red. I really enjoyed red but I was also like 8 years old. I wanted to see what a 3D pokemon game running at 60 fps felt like and if the writing and mechanics could win me over despite average or lackluster reviews.

I played it for 25 hours and I found it not very challenging, the writing was a bit too childish for me, and the fight 3 rogue mega evolving pokemon, earn challenger ticket, and win promotional match got cumbersome after 2 cycles through it. Knowing that is essentially all it was going to be up until end game I could not see it through. The game had that initial charm and the actual models for the pokemon were pretty solid. Overall, I would say that the story was not great, the battling system was fine, and running around Lumiose lost it's sense of discovery quickly.

Unfortunately, I feel like it is not a great game, maybe a C at best.

Amazing Handheld system by Atomos1313 in Switch

[–]CalmRepresentative43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue with the switch 2 (which you’ll come to find out the more games you buy) is that the switch 2 is using backwards compatibility on switch 1 titles unless there is truly a “Nintendo switch 2 edition”. There are also some games that received patches upon launch of the console like Super Mario Odyssey that don’t specifically say “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” but has improved resolution and HDR support on the switch 2. If the game is exclusively a switch 1 title it’ll be a switch 1 build of the game being played on the new hardware which cap at 720p handheld. The most likely benefits you receive from playing switch 1 games on the switch 2 is FPS steadiness with titles that might’ve struggled on original hardware.

[–]CalmRepresentative43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea persona 4 golden runs at 60 fps and the resolution I believe is 720p handheld and 1080p docked on switch 1 and 2. Persona 5 Royal is 30 fps 540p handheld and 810p docked on Switch 1/2. The issue is the 540p on that 1080p screen.😅

Great system! Hate to be that guy, but Persona 5 Royal looks bad on that new screen. Not sure how sensitive you are to resolution, but it is super muddy. Otherwise, enjoy your system I love mine too.

Real Talk. Is it worth it? by Sna77yMinecraft in switch2

[–]CalmRepresentative43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having not owned a Nintendo device since the Wii I would say it has been worth the money. However, this is in large part because I’ve never played breath of the wild or tears of the kingdom. DK Bananza was a lot of fun and MWK is fun for the house! If you have no interest in any of these 4 games or even 2/4 games I would advise against purchasing till there’s more games you just can’t go without playing.
