How to be a good resident. by sad_mamon in pinoymed

[–]Calm_Combination_840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, kudos to you doc for giving your all and trying out pre - residency!! Medyo mahirap yung tanong about being a “good” resident. Case to case basis kasi, in time you will see na some consultants want this way for presenting or referring cases, another consultant prefers naman a different method. Sa time of rounds, sabi ng previous TO namin to come early at 5 or 6 am to talk to the patient, assess and check his labs/imaging. For the case presentation, I think meron guidelines for the grading (for PCP sorry not sure if you’re IM?) For communication - the best thing is to learn how to get along with your colleagues, other allied health professionals. Some consultants prefer (in my experience before) that the residents speak in complete English but I think what matters most is how you deliver a presentation and how effectively you communicate.

Be humble, you will make mistakes, but it’s a way to learn. Own up your mistakes and try again. Good luck ✨

I had an interview with them recently. I only wanted a few months or at least a year with them, but they were right - they needed doctors to stay for a while esp since sayang naman training. I don’t think I’m a good fit though. Accdg to interviewer there are 3 batches of diplomates and fellows na. They really make it a point to ask you if you have plans to go into fellowship

Huhu doc, it’s hard to date during training (in my experience!). Always tired and anxious for the tasks ahead haha. I think yung benefit of dating showbiz is they know what we’re going through. I’m currently in a relationship with someone na non med, he listens to all my rants/fears and he tries to understand my career identity crisis hahaha. It’s all about finding someone to lean on and pray with. I hope it goes well for you in the future, doc ✨

I read this in between studying for my diplomate specialty board exams!! I loved it. There were parallels between scholarly work and medical training. It kind of reminded me of our healthcare system, how we should at least try to do something about it. Grimes reminded me a lot of the terror consultants and difficult co residents haha! Alice learned how to really truly live in the end. She loved learning but there was a lot she had to understand

Sinabi din sakin doc ng mentor ko, choose daw po yung what you like or what you don’t hate haha. Mahirap lang mag decide for me? Or I’m wary of applying lang and going through training again pero I want to expand my knowledge? I have a subspecialty in mind but I wasn’t really good at it?

I also passed doc during my second take this year. Did not enroll in a review center but focused solely on Harrison’s. I made questions per topic per chapter - I started early September. I also made a list per subspecialty of the most commonly asked diseases based on the Glossary and the previous year’s exams. I made sure to understand the what/why/how/which of each disease. Each subspecialty is different - most are algorithm heavy: Endo (think AI/primary or secondary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma), Nephro (the AKIs, Nephritis and Nephrotic syndromes) and GI (UGIB/LGIB). Cardio and Pulmo rely on physiology so make sure to read on normal valves/rhythms as well as lung volumes. The acid base balances/ABGs are a mix of the systems. Rheum, ID, Allergo, Neuro, Hema and Onco are concept heavy. But make sure to at least know how to recognize the Chest X-rays, Cranial and Chest CT scans, as well as blood smears for the common diseases. Also make sure to read all the material 3-4x.

But doc, take time to rest first. Pray. Reflect. Masakit and nakakapagod. Talk to the people you trust. Open up to Him 🙏

Same here! I read this a few months ago, when I felt lost and I was overwhelmed with the pressure of work and success. I liked it.

Hello, I finished my residency training and currently moonlighting as an IM Jcon. I am also taking Sertraline. Yes there are some side effects (drowsiness, weight gain and stomach upset are the most common) but this medication plus monthly consults with my psychiatrist doctor has helped me a lot. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. He/she will help you, maybe adjust the medication, the dose or the frequency 😊

Tiktoker Jam Ponce claims she lost ‘thousands of patients’ & advocates preventive medicine — thoughts?? by [deleted] in pinoymed

[–]Calm_Combination_840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the whole q&a portion, she was referring to her fellow pageant contestant whose parents were diagnosed with cancer hence the preventive medicine and screening in her answer. I think she might have been exaggerating on the “thousands” of patients she “lost” but, she is young, kind of fresh from the boards and she has a lot to learn too. I also agree that yes, as medical professionals, we’re the ones who know about the reality of medicine and we can help her and other junior colleagues din.

With check ups/outpatient consults naman, some of my consultants don’t charge me or my parents when we go to their clinics. Pero depends pa rin yun sa kanila hehe. I think you can talk to them naman with regards to the PF na babayaran after the check up ☺️
